‘A PRESSING ENGAGEMENT’ (MMPR)

Please feel free to comment on my review.

This is a Jason-focused episode in the ‘Power Rangers’ TV series. In this episode, Jason is trying to break a fitness record with bench-pressing. During the episode, Jason doubts his ability to succeed. His friends comfort and reassure him, but Bulk and Skull ridicules Jason for trying to beat the record.

Meanwhile, Rita has other plans for Jason, as she attempts to separate him from the other Rangers during a monster fight. Rita is quite a petty villainess this way, isn’t she? She soon sends Goldar and the King Sphinx monster to fight off Jason as the Red Ranger once he gets summoned into the battle.

This is another filler episode in the ‘Power Rangers’ TV series in its first season. Not a great episode by any means and it isn’t very memorable, but it’s decent enough. It’s nice to see Jason needing the help of his friends when he’s separated from them. Zordon also helps to send in the other Rangers. 🙂

There are some very weird moments in the episode that are used for comic relief. One is when Kimberley blows up a bubble during Jason’s bench-pressing (Why did she do that?!) before Zack crashes into her on his skateboard. Another is when Bulk rips open his ‘pants’ after he tackles Jason.

The Megazord fight with Goldar and King Sphinx is better than the one in ‘Day of the Dumpster’. In the fight, the Megazord gets to use the Power Sword to defeat King Sphinx, which is good. But as in ‘Day of the Dumpster’, Goldar retreats again. Is Goldar so scared of the Megazord’s Power Sword? 😀

I did wonder why the Rangers weren’t able to get to Jason immediately when he was fighting Goldar and King Sphinx as giants in the desert. Thankfully, Zordon has the Rangers send Jason their Power Crystals, which allows them to teleport to the area. It’s very interesting to see how that happened.

There’s a moment when during the Megazord fight, Jason has it reverted to its tank mode in order to weaken Goldar and King Sphinx as giants before they go back to Megazord mode again. It was quite fast to see that happen, and the Rangers could’ve fought the monsters in just the Megazord mode.

The episode concludes with Jason managing to break Bulk’s record. Richard Genelle as Ernie brings out a cake for everyone to enjoy, only for Bulk to have his face smashed into it when he trips on a weight. One does wonder how he was able to do a bench-pressing record when he can be so clumsy.

i remember having this and the previous “teamwork” episodes on vhs and thought both episodes had awesome monster battles as well as the introduction of the power weapons and power crystals. i wish king sphinx could’ve been a legit threat in battle rather than be clumsy at times. both episodes were still fun though.

      Hi Peter,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on ‘Teamwork’ and ‘A Pressing Engagement’. I’m pleased the Power Weapons and Power Crystals were introduced in the third and fourth episodes of the ‘Power Rangers’ series, as they get used quite often in Season 1 of ‘Mighty Morphin’. I can’t say King Sphinx was that memorable as a Power Rangers villian/monster, but like I said, ‘A Pressing Engagement’ is a decent episode with him in it.

      Many thanks for your comments.

      Tim 🙂
