‘Call the Midwife’, Series 6, Episode 2 (TV)

SERIES 6, EPISODE 2

Please feel free to comment on my review.

This ‘Call the Midwife’ episode has two unique plots that were pretty invigorating and reassuring in places. There’s also the exit of a certain character featured in the series who might return later on. 🙂

There’s still trouble at Nonnatus House with Harriet Walter as Sister Ursula continuing to reign with an iron fist. I’m still uncertain why Sister Ursula had to take over since she was meant to be temporary.

The midwives struggle to toe the line here, especially when Sister Ursula is insistent on being not too emotionally-involved with their parents. Clearly Sister Ursula hasn’t delivered a baby herself here. 😐

The new unpopular edict forced by Sister Ursula is put to the test when Daniel Kendrick as new father George Marsh gets badly burnt in an explosion at the docks. He’s unable to support his family.

He’s also blinded which doesn’t help as he can’t see his child. His family includes Erin Doherty as Jessie Marsh and Judy “I’m busy!” Flynn as Ada Ward, Jessie’s mum. I was amazed to see Judy Flynn.

For me, she played Julie in ‘The Brittas Empire’ BBC sitcom series. Ada’s not in this episode much and she has some ‘condition’ that prevents her from taking Jessie to the hospital to see her husband.

She’s nice enough though as she’s very supportive to Jessie who manages to give birth to her baby whilst George has his accident. At least, Ada wasn’t rude like Julie often was in ‘The Brittas Empire’. 😀

I like how the midwifery team are determined to put their patients first rather than utilising the new edict Sister Ursula has decreed. I’m just waiting for Sister Ursula to leave sooner rather than later. 😀

Emerald Fennell as Patsy also ignores the new rule by Sister Urusula when she attends to Rachel Denning as Penny Reed. She’s an expectant mother and has her husband Dean Whatton as Derek. 🙂

I’ve seen Rachel Denning before since she was in the ‘Doctor Who’ episode ‘The Pyramid at the End of the World’ with Peter Capaldi. As far as I’m concerned, Rachel Denning was the best part in that.

Penny and Derek both have achondroplasia. This is colloquially known as dwarfisms. Problems with Penny’s pregnancy are anticipated, including that the baby might be stillborn or live for a short time.

The midwives’ preparation for the Reeds and their infant and the Reeds’ unconditional devotion to each other and their unborn child makes an impact on Patsy, who faces a tough decision on her part.

Patsy has received a letter about her father in Hong Kong. There’s the possibility her father might die there. She’s reluctant to leave since it would mean parting from her lover Kate Lamb as Delia Busby.

Eventually, all is successful with Penny’s baby being born and is alive and well. Soon, Patsy decides to leave Nonnatus House and go to Hong Kong to see her father there, having a tearful farewell with Delia.

It was sad to see Patsy leave the series as she is a very likeable character and it was interesting to see her relationship with Delia. I’m curious about whether she’ll come back and how she will return.

I liked it when Judy Parfitt as Sister Monica Joan encouraged Patsy to go to Hong Kong to see her father. And I believe that Linda Bassett as Nurse Crane knows about Delia being lovers with Patsy. 😐

This episode also introduces a new character to the series – Jennifer Kirby as Valerie Dyer. Valerie is a barmaid who was once a former nurse in the army. She’s quick-thinking when the dock fire occurs.

She helps Laura Main as Shelagh when they attend to the causalities, including George Marsh and a man who dies very tragically. Shelagh is shocked by the general lack of basic health and safety there.

Shelagh strives to make a difference to the man that work there when she gives her testimony during an inquest. Valerie gives her testimony too and she shares Shelagh’s concerns for this matter.

Later on, Shelagh and her husband Stephen McGann as Dr. Turner share the happy news of Shelagh’s pregnancy to their children Timothy and Angela. Timothy works it out that Shelagh’s pregnant.

Series 6, Episode 2 of ‘Call the Midwife’ has been a very engaging episode to watch. I liked how the plot threads eventually resolved themselves. I hope that the next episode will be Sister Ursula’s last.

‘Series 6, Episode 2’ rating – 8/10
