BB@10 – Reflection on ‘Transformers’

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

One of the things I’m very pleased about in terms of an achievement in early 2022, is the fact that I was able to do in-depth reviews on the live-action ‘Transformers’ movies up until that point, including the five films directed by Michael Bay, which I found rather gruelling.

To be fair, the first film made in 2007 was quite bearable considering it was the first instalment of the live-action film series. But as time went on, the sequels got worse in quality especially with repeating the same formula involving characters and storylines. 😐

I still stand by my argument that ‘The Last Knight’, the fifth instalment of the film series is the worst so far. More so than ‘Revenge of the Fallen’. The frustration I have with the films is how inconsistent they are and how not much care and attention is made for the characters.

I will say this, the reviews themselves have been pretty fun to write, considering that I was able to include a lot of jokes as well as criticisms about the films. My ‘Fawlty Towers’ joke in my ‘Last Knight’ review has to be my favourite. I’m pleased I got through the films.

Before doing in-depth reviews on the five live-action ‘Transformers’ movies directed by Michael Bay, I saw the 2019 film ‘Bumblebee’ at the cinema. I greatly enjoyed seeing the film back then and I’m very happy I was able to do an in-depth review on the film in 2022.

For my Early Bank Holiday Monday blog post in May 2019, I decided to share a brand-new page and reviews on the ‘Beast Wars: Transformers’ TV series. ‘Beast Wars’ is my era of ‘Transformers’ when I grew up watching it in the 1990s. I’m pleased to share that on my blog.

By the time 2023 came, I saw ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’, the seventh instalment of the live-action film series. I saw it as part of a double-bill of films at the cinema. As well as ‘Rise of the Beasts’, I watched ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ on the big screen.

On reflection, ‘Rise of the Beasts’ isn’t as good as ‘Bumblebee’, but it’s way better than the live-action ‘Transformers’ films directed by Michael Bay. I hope to do an in-depth review on the film someday as soon as I’ve completed updating my ‘Beast Wars’ reviews.

The last ‘Transformers’ movie I saw at the cinema was in 2024 and it was ‘Transformers One’, an CGI-animated film depicting the Transformers’ beginnings on Cybertron. I greatly enjoyed the film, and I consider it one of the best ‘Transformers’ films ever made. 🙂

To celebrate my blog’s 10th anniversary, I decided to update my ‘Beast Wars’ reviews which I started on Early Bank Holiday in May this year. It’s on pause for this month, but I’m looking forward to continuing updating the rest of my ‘Beast Wars’ reviews this year and next year.

In terms of future ‘Transformers’ reviews, I’d like to do a film review season containing any remaining ‘Transformers’ films that I’ve yet to review, including the 1986 film, ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’ and ‘Transformers One‘. Hopefully that’ll be very soon.

Whether I’ll get to do reviews on the Generation 1 cartoon TV series is another matter. I’d certainly like to do reviews on the G1 ‘Transformers’ series. Maybe I could make a start by including the three-part story ‘More Than Meets The Eye’ as part of my film review season.

In terms of the future of live-action ‘Transformers’ movies, I’m not entirely comfortable with the idea of Michael Bay returning to direct another one. I might skip seeing that film at the cinema and leave it until it gets a release on home media before I do a review on it.

At conventions, I’m amazed by some of the cosplayers dressed up as ‘Transformers’ characters like Optimus Prime and Bumblebee. There are also displays of the Transformers as vehicles like Optimus Prime, Bumblebee and Barricade from the movies.

‘Transformers’ is a franchise I currently enjoy checking out now and again and I’m glad I’ve been able to share my thoughts on the movies that have come out over the years. I’m looking forward to updating more ‘Beast Wars’ reviews. ‘Beast Machines’ however…um…

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim 🙂

Sorry to say that after seeing the first Transformers movie, I totally lost interest. The CGI extravaganza was just too blinding for me. But I admire those who can enjoy the films. Thank you, Tim, for your review.

      Hi scifimike,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts about the ‘Transformers’ movies.

When you consider the first ‘Transformers’ movie from 2007 doesn’t echo the original spirit of the ‘Transformers’ series, especially with Michael Bay as the director, one should have expected the same style and approach used in the sequels for them to go bad. I would have done things differently in respecting the original cartoon TV series whilst bringing it into live-action for a modern audience. I would have provided more ‘Beast Wars’ vibes in the ‘Transformers’ live-action films with stronger focus on character development and story rather than focusing too much on action and comedy, which ultimately wasn’t very funny for me.

I’m pleased we’ve had good ‘Transformers’ movies in ‘Bumblebee’, ‘Rise of the Beasts’ and ‘Transformers One’ recently. I hope to revisit ‘Rise of the Beasts’ and ‘Transformers One’ and provide in-depth thoughts on them as well as on the 1986 film. Again, in terms of the future of live-action movies, I’m not keen about Michael Bay returning as the director and it’s only going to make me check out other films instead.

      Many thanks for your comments.

      Tim 🙂
