Hello everyone! 🙂
Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley
I’ve seen the latest ‘Jurassic World’ film ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’ at the cinema. And I can definitely confirm there’s no “Please don’t say they’re raptors”, “They’re raptors” in the film. Meaning no Maxwell Smart from ‘Get Smart’ to say, “I asked you not to say that!” 😀
Back in 2022, I checked out the first six ‘Jurassic Park/World’ movies, with the first five at home and the sixth film ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ at the cinema. This was based on the understanding that ‘Dominion’ would be the final film in the series as stated in media.
But of course, ‘Dominion’ made lots of money. Therefore, a seventh film was made. And at the time of this review, with ‘Rebirth’ grossing millions worldwide against a budget of $180 million, it’s likely an eighth film will be made, despite many saying the film series has run its course. 😐
I can’t say I’m a fan of the ‘Jurassic Park/World’ films. I mean, they’re entertaining enough, and I enjoyed seeing the first six movies when I saw them in 2022. But I’ve not gone back to them again and again. I only saw the first ‘Jurassic Park’ film recently before ‘Rebirth’. 😐
I don’t think ‘Rebirth’ is a film that needed to be made. From seeing it on the big screen, it wasn’t inspiring, as it’s a bog-standard film of humans tackling dinosaurs in a world where dinosaurs roam freely. It didn’t feel that epic enough compared to the first six films.
‘Rebirth’ is more a standalone film compared to the first six films. You don’t need to see the first six films to watch ‘Rebirth’, as there aren’t many connections or returning characters in it. Alan Grant from the first movie gets a mention, but frankly that’s about it.
I assume that ‘Rebirth’ takes place directly after ‘Dominion’, especially with the dinosaurs roaming freely, but it could easily take place alongside any film in the ‘Jurassic World’ trilogy like in-between ‘Fallen Kingdom’ and ‘Dominion’. I don’t think it’s that very clear. 😐
An aspect of this film that fascinates me is that it’s directed by Gareth Edwards, who directed ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’. The film’s screenplay is by David Koepp, who first wrote the first ‘Spider-Man’ movie and he worked on the first two ‘Jurassic Park’ movies. 🙂
The film’s cast is led by Scarlett Johansson, who you’ve probably seen as Natasha Romanov/Black Widow in the ‘Marvel Cinematic Universe’ films. Well, Chris Pratt led the ‘Jurassic World’ trilogy, I guess it makes sense for Scarlett Johansson to be in this film. 😀
There’s also Mahershala Ali (who voiced Aaron Davis in the ‘Spider-Verse’ films), Jonathan Bailey as a scientist who could be a love interest for Scarlett Johansson’s character, and Rupert Friend who plays a business-type that’s pretty mean and ends up getting killed. 😀
There’s Manuel Garcia-Rulfo who plays the father of two daughters played by Luna Blaise and Audrina Miranda, and they’re joined by David Iacono who plays the boyfriend of Luna Blaise’s character. Ed Skrein, who was in the first ‘Deadpool’ movie and ‘Patrick’, is in this film too.
And he gets killed off quite early in this film by a sea dinosaur. 😀 Well, I suppose that dinosaur did the job of killing Francis as well as Deadpool. 😀 There’s Bechir Sylvain and Philippine Velge who play members of Scarlett Johannson’s team to search for dinosaurs.
If you’re wondering why I’ve not mentioned the characters’ names that the cast are playing, well, it’s because the characters aren’t really that memorable for me. Unless there’s an eighth ‘Jurassic World’ film that Scarlett Johansson is in, I’ll remember to mention names.
The film does have two plots going on in it with Scarlett Johansson’s team searching for three dinosaurs to collect blood samples to cure diseases, I believe, whilst there’s the plot of a family of a father, two daughters and one daughter’s boyfriend surviving the film.
Honestly, one plot would have been enough, as we didn’t need the family joining Scarlett Johannsson’s team in the film. There’s also like only one scene featuring the T-Rex and that occurs in the family’s plot. The big dinosaur at the film’s end wasn’t really that special.
The T-Rex should have battled the big dinosaur at the film’s end like how it happened at the end of ‘Jurassic World’ (the fourth film in the series). Also, the boyfriend going to pee at night and being saved by a pterodactyl from raptors attacking him wasn’t really needed.
‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’ isn’t a film that I’d say was spectacular. I’m glad I saw it and it was entertaining enough to spend 133 minutes on. But I can’t say it was that inspiring, even with Scarlett Johansson in it. It feels like an obligatory film not required to be made.
It’s likely that an eighth ‘Jurassic World’ film will be made, despite the mixed reception it’s had. Only time will tell as to whether the ‘Jurassic Park/World’ film series will run its course. If you enjoyed this film, I’m happy for you. But I wouldn’t say this is a big winner.
Thanks for reading.
Bye for now!
Tim 🙂
