Quick Movie Review – ‘Captain America: Brave New World’

SPOILERS ALERT!!!

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

Well, I’ve seen the first ‘Marvel Cinematic Universe’ film for this year! I’ve seen ‘Captain America: Brave New World’. Interestingly, ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ was the only ‘MCU’ film released in 2024. Extraordinary, considering the amount of ‘MCU’ content we’ve had.

I enjoyed ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ at the cinema. It was a good film to spend 118 minutes on, starring Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America. The story was quite gripping to get into, and I enjoyed watching the action scenes and the characters. 🙂

I must admit, it’s been a while since I’ve seen ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ series on Disney+, which was released in 2021. I don’t think you need to worry about seeing that series before going in and seeing this film, but it helps especially with identifying characters.

Characters from ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ that appear in ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ include Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres who’s become the Falcon, and Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley. It was so fascinating to see them appear in this movie.

Essentially, Sam Wilson became the new Captain America in ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’. In this film, he faces an international incident and must uncover the motives of a nefarious global plan. Sam and Joaquin/Falcon succeed in a special mission in Mexico.

They’re soon invited to the White House where Thaddeus Ross (now played by Harrison Ford) asks Sam to bring back the Avengers. Sam faces challenges whilst being Captain America and he must do all he can in overcoming the trials and tribulations that lie ahead.

It was fascinating to see Harrison Ford played Thaddeus Ross in this movie and play a major role, compared to William Hurt who sadly passed away. I enjoyed his take on the character. It was really fascinating to see him become the Red Hulk for the film’s final act.

The fight between Sam/Captain America and the Red Hulk was great to watch. Incidentally, this isn’t the first time Harrison Ford has played a President of the United States. He did that before in ‘Air Force One’, which I watched on Disney+ not long ago. 🙂

The film also features Shira Haas as Ruth Bat-Seraph, an Israeli former Black Widow and high-ranking US government official who is also President Ross’ security advisor. There’s Xosha Roquemore as Leila Taylor, a Secret Service agent that works for President Ross. 🙂

There’s Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson as Copperhead, William Mark McCullough as Dennis Dunphy, and Giancarlo Esposito (who I’ve seen in ‘The Mandalorian’) as Seth Voelker/Sidewinder. There’s Tim Blake Nelson as the villainous Samuel Sterns/Leader. 😮

Samuel Sterns has been in the ‘MCU’ before, as he was in ‘The Incredible Hulk’. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen that film. It was great to see Liv Tyler reprise her role as Betty Ross, Thaddeus Ross’ daughter, both as a voiceover on the phone and as a physical cameo.

Sebastian Stan also reprises his role of Bucky Barnes in one scene of the film. There’s Takehiro Hira as the Japanese prime minster Ozaki, and Harsh Nayyar as the Indian prime minister Kapur. The film was directed by a newcomer to the ‘MCU’ – Julius Onah. 🙂

‘Captain America: Brave New World’ has been a very enjoyable ‘MCU’ film to watch at the cinema. The performances of the cast are very good and the action scenes were exciting. Anthony Mackie fares well as Sam Wilson in this film and it was good to see the Red Hulk.

The film ends with a post-credits scene where Sam visits Samuel Sterns at the Raft, which was in ‘Captain America: Civil War’. Sterns warns of an incoming attack from other worlds. Is this foreshadowing of the upcoming ‘Avengers’ two-part movie for 2026 and 2027?

We’ll have to wait and see! 😀

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim 🙂

A excellent review Tim personally I didn’t rate it as highly it was average, I still think Bucky should been next Capt & not sold on Falcon as Capt who doesn’t even have super soldier serum.

Have you read about the making of this movie? 90% was reshot then another set of reshoots look it up it’s fascinating reading.

I find the comic book era to be in a bit of a slump the new Superman looks awful & the only comic book related shows I enjoyed recently is Deadpool & Wolverine & The Penguin series which was top tier storytelling with great performances.

      Hi Simon,

Good to hear from you again. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on ‘Captain America: Brave New World’. That’s fair enough. I can’t say this movie is excellent, but I enjoyed seeing it twice at the cinema when I did. The approach to how MCU films are done today is more in keeping with appealing to modern attitudes compared to what would be considered traditional storytelling in how characters are supposed to be developed. I would have liked Bucky to have been Captain America had ‘Avengers: Endgame’ gone in that direction, but sadly it wasn’t to be. I appreciate ‘The Falcon and the Winter’ series and ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ exploring Sam Wilson’s journey to being Captain America, especially when it was so rushed to be included at the end of ‘Endgame’.

I’m looking forward to seeing Bucky Barnes in ‘Thunderbolts*’ when it comes out in May and I’m glad he at least made a cameo in the latest ‘Captain America’ film. I didn’t know 90% of the film was reshot and then more reshots followed after that. Thanks for sharing that with me, Simon.

I’m looking forward to seeing the new ‘Superman’ movie when it comes out in July this year. I hope it’ll be entertaining enough and maybe it’ll be lighter in approach compared to how ‘Man of Steel’ was presented, even though I enjoyed that film when I saw it in 2013. I’m glad I saw ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ at the cinema last year, especially as it was the only ‘MCU’ film in 2024. I can’t comment on ‘The Penguin’ series since I’ve not seen it yet. I know it’ll be out on DVD soon this month. I’m glad you enjoyed ‘The Penguin’ series, but I’m not in a rush to see it since I wasn’t keen on ‘The Batman’ when it came out in cinemas in 2022.

      Many thanks for your comments.

      Best wishes,

      Tim 🙂
