Disney+ Roundup – ‘Romancing the Stone’ & ‘Bedtime Stories’

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

Things have been very hectic for me this past month, but I’m happy to share this quick Disney+ Roundup on two films I saw on Disney+ recently in June. Both are comedies in unique measure. One is a 1984 romantic comedy-adventure and the other is a 2008 fantasy comedy. Are these films good?

The 1984 romantic comedy-adventure film is ‘Romancing the Stone’, starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. ‘Romancing the Stone’ happens to be a film directed by Robert Zemeckis. This was before he went on to direct the ‘Back to the Future’ film trilogy as well as ‘The Polar Express’ film.

The film is also written by the late Diane Thomas and produced by Michael Douglas himself. ‘Romancing the Stone’ focuses on Kathleen Turner as a romance novelist who ventures beyond her New York City comfort zone to Colombia, so that she can rescue her sister from criminals holding her for ransom. 🙂

Kathleen Turner meets Michael Douglas, who helps her in her endeavours to locate a giant emerald called El Corazón (‘The Heart’) and their characters end up falling in love. It was so surreal to see Michael Douglas in ‘Romancing the Stone’ before he appeared in the ‘Ant-Man’ films in the ‘MCU’. 🙂

I’ve also seen Kathleen Turner in ‘A Simple Wish’ with Mara Wilson and Martin Short, which was made a decade or so after ‘Romancing the Stone’. She’s also voiced Jessica Rabbit in ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ and appeared in ‘Marley & Me’. Incredible I’ve seen her in more than ‘A Simple Wish’. 🙂

The film also features Danny De Vito, way before he starred in and directed ‘Matilda’, as one of the criminals in the film. I enjoyed checking out ‘Romancing the Stone’ on Disney+ recently, as it was a fun film to sit through. Perhaps I’ll be seeing the sequel ‘The Jewel of the Nile’ soon. Who knows? 😀

The 2008 fantasy comedy film is ‘Bedtime Stories’, starring Adam Sandler. This is the first time I’ve come across an Adam Sandler film ever. The closest I got to reviewing something produced by Adam Sandler is ‘The Master of Disguise’, which is considered one of the worst comedy films ever made. 😐

Adam Sandler’s films tend to be notorious, ranging from being very bad to decent to quite good. I’m not sure I’d recommend ‘Bedtime Times’ as a good introduction to Adam Sandler’s films. To be sure, I enjoyed checking out the film on Disney+, but it’s got a zany wackiness that makes me tilt my head.

The film itself has Adam Sandler playing a hotel handyman who tells stories to his niece and nephew that come true. The concept of the film is sound enough, but it’s not helped when the bedtime stories he tells are outlandish and the comedy delivered doesn’t help matters in that certain regard.

As well as Adam Sandler, the film features Keri Russell as his love interest, Guy Pearce (who’s been in ‘Iron Man 3’) as his rival, Russell Brand (Yes, he’s in this film 😐 ) as his best friend and Richard Griffiths (who’s been in the ‘Harry Potter’ films) as the CEO and founder of the hotel Adam works at.

There’s also Aisha Tyler, Teresa Palmer, Lucy Lawless, Courtney Cox and Jonathan Pryce in the film. And if you’re wondering why I’m not referring to the characters’ names in the film, well, it’s because I don’t find them that memorable to mention. Also, there’s a guinea pig with ginormous eyes. Seriously, what?!!

If you ask me which film I prefer the most out of the two I’ve seen on Disney+ lately, well, it’ll have to be ‘Romancing the Stone’ over ‘Bedtime Stories’. Whether I’ll see ‘The Jewel of the Nile’ or more Adam Sandler films in future remains to be determined. Otherwise, I’ve enjoyed what I saw recently.

Stay tuned for another Disney+ Roundup on ‘Bradley’s Basement’ soon. 🙂

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim 🙂

Romancing The Stone was my first intro to the acting careers of Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. I had seen Danny DeVito prior in Taxi. I so fondly remember his line in this movie: “These hands that are gonna break every bone in your body…Later!” I didn’t like The Jewel Of The Nile as much, hardly at all I think. But it was certainly a treat seeing how these three stars reteamed for The War Of The Roses. Thank you, Tim, for your review.

      Hi scifimike,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on ‘Romancing the Stone’. I don’t know if I’ll be seeing ‘The Jewel of the Nile’ anytime soon on Disney+, but it’s interesting you don’t regard it highly compared to ‘Romancing the Stone’. I didn’t realise Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito reunited for ‘The War of the Roses’. Thanks for sharing that.

      Best wishes,

      Tim 🙂

You’re very welcome. The War Of The Roses was a quite a strong departure from Romancing The Stone for its three stars, and with much praise for the acting. Especially Danny’s speech at the end on what’s to be learned from marital conflicts. I’d like to read your review on it.

        Thanks scifimike,

I’ll certainly consider ‘The War of the Roses’ for a review. I’ll probably check out ‘The Jewel of the Nile’ first as part of the Michael Douglas/Kathleen Turner/Danny Devito trilogy.

        Best wishes,

        Tim 🙂
