Quick DVD Review – ‘The Dog Who Saved Easter’

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ and I’m Tim Bradley!

So, back in December 2019, I did a quick DVD review on ‘The Dog Who Saved Christmas Collection’. This contained the three films ‘The Dog Who Saved Christmas’, ‘The Dog Who Saved Christmas Vacation’ and ‘The Dog Who Saved the Christmas Holidays’, as part of ‘The Dog Who Saved…’ film series.

Whilst I’d seen those Christmas films, there were three other ‘Dog Who Saved…’ films for me to check out, including ‘The Dog Who Saved Halloween’, ‘The Dog Who Saved Easter’ and ‘The Dog Who Saved Summer’. For Easter in 2024, I decided to check out ‘The Dog Who Saved Easter’ on DVD.

I know I’ve been quite critical about ‘The Dog Who Saved…’ films being repetitive in terms of their storytelling formula. The films focus on a dog named Zeus who must protect his family – the Bannisters – as well as their home from two criminals – Dean Cain as Ted and Joey Diaz as Stewie. 😀

In many ways, they are ‘Home Alone’ rip-offs with a dog in it. Despite that, the films are reasonably harmless and there’s a sense of enjoyment from checking them out on DVD. This was especially the case for my parents and I when we watched ‘The Dog Who Saved Easter’ recently on Easter Saturday. 🙂

But is there anything different in ‘The Dog Who Saved Easter’ compared to what’s in the Christmas films? Well, sort-of. The film has the Bannisters on their way to a family cruise for Easter. But they don’t take Zeus with them, since he gets sent to a doggie day care, run by Beverley Mitchell as Alice.

Yeah, the Bannisters don’t appear much in this film. In fact, Gary Valentine who would regularly play George Bannister, the father of the family, doesn’t appear in this film at all, as he went on ahead of the cruise before everyone else. Whether Gary Valentine was unavailable for this film, I don’t know.

Incidentally, so far, ‘The Dog Who Saved Easter’ is the fifth and penultimate film of ‘The Dog Who Saved…’ film series. The next film ‘The Dog Who Saved Summer’ is the sixth and final film of the series. Don’t worry, Gary Valentine does appear in the last film of this children’s doggie film series. 🙂

Elisa Donovan returns to play Belinda Bannister, the mother of the family. There’s the two kids: Michael Leone as Ben and Caitlyn Leone as Kara. In keeping with tradition, the casting of the Bannister children is inconsistent. 😀 These are new actors as the kids compared to the previous films.

Mario López returns to voice Zeus in ‘The Dog Who Saved Easter’. This is interesting, as Mario López has mostly voiced Zeus in ‘The Dog Who Saved…’ film series, barring ‘The Dog Who Saved Halloween’ and ‘The Dog Who Saved the Christmas Holidays’. Joey Lawrence voiced Zeus in those. 😐

It was amusing to see Dean Cain as Ted and Joey Diaz as Stewie, the two crooks. Since seeing ‘The Dog Who Saved Christmas Collection’, I’ve seen Dean Cain as Clark Kent/Superman in ‘Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman’. It’s so surreal to see him as a villain in these kids’ doggie films. 🙂

It’s also astonishing that before doing ‘The Dog Who Saved…’ films, Joey Diaz was the guy who said, “You want him, you have to go through me” in ‘Spider-Man 2’. 😀 Ted and Stewie are joined by Patrick Muldoon as Fred Stein, as they’re employed to ruin Alice’s daycare business for a certain client.

That certain happens to be Catherine Hicks as Cressida. Catherine Hicks played Gillian in ‘Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home’. It was very amusing to see her in this film, especially with being slightly over-the-top as a villain. In fact, there are plenty of very amusing moments to take away from this film. 😀

It was funny when the drill that Stewie gave Fred turned out to be a toy and I love Ted’s line of dialogue, “That’s a toy, you coconut!” Why is that not considered the best insult ever made?! 😀 It was also funny and stupid when Ted electrocuted himself after he said, “This time, it’s personal!” Seriously?!! 😀

And of course, who can forget the moment when Dean Cain as Ted got covered in dog poops once the doogie poop bin got pushed by Zeus.

Cuddles: Ooh! Sausages!

No, Cuddles! Don’t be disgusting!

There’s also a bunny rabbit that appears in this film called Peter, voiced by Michael Healey. Peter? As in Peter Rabbit? Seriously?!!! 😀 Apparently, Peter hates dogs and doesn’t get on with Zeus. It’s actually amusing when Peter keeps calling the dogs ‘mutts’. That gets repeated throughout the film.

Puddles: That bunny speaks my language. I consider Cuddles a ‘mutt’.

Cuddles whines in protest.

There’s a romance between Alice and Matthew Lawrence as Will, a vet who supports her dog care business as well as a romance between Zeus and Will’s dog, Gabrielle (voiced by Nicole Eggert). Matthew Lawrence played Chris Hillard, one of the three kids in ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ with Robin Williams. 🙂

‘The Dog Who Saved Easter’ is a very enjoyable film to check out over the Easter holidays. I’m pleased my parents and I saw this film, as it contains many hilarious moments. Despite many inconsistences in ‘The Dog Who Saved…’ film series, these films are quite a lot of fun to check out on DVD. 🙂

By the way, it was funny to see Stewie in an Easter Bunny outfit for a bit. 😀 Also, who were those two chicks that kept popping up throughout the film? 😀

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim 🙂
