Quick Movie Review – ‘The Marvels’

SPOILERS ALERT!!!

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ and I’m Tim Bradley!

So, I’m quite behind on certain ‘Marvel Cinematic Universe’ shows on Disney+ at this point. I’ve seen shows like ‘WandaVision’, ‘Ms. Marvel’ and ‘Hawkeye’ to know some of the characters who are in ‘The Marvels’, but I haven’t seen ‘Secret Invasion’ featuring Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury yet.

Hopefully, I’ll catch up on more ‘MCU’ shows in the New Year. In the meantime, I’ve enjoyed checking out ‘The Marvels’ at the cinema recently. This film is considered a flop at the box office, but I’ve enjoyed the characters featured in the film, including the three main leads who are great as trio.

‘The Marvels’ is mainly a follow-up to ‘Captain Marvel’, which featured Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel and was released at cinemas in 2019. It’s also a follow-up to ‘WandaVision’, which featured Monica Rambeau as well as a follow-up to ‘Ms. Marvel’, which featured Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel. 🙂

Brie Larson returns to play Carol Danvers whilst Teyonah Parris returns as Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani returns as Kamala Khan. It was great to see these three characters appearing as a trio in the same film, and they work well as a team in order to combat a deadly threat to the main universe.

In ‘The Marvels’, Carol, Monica and Iman find themselves swapping places every time they use their powers. This is from Carol and Monica touching an anomaly in space-time (I believe), connected by the armband that Kamala wears to give her powers. They work together to battle a vengeful person.

Now, I’m sure there are people out there who are likely to be confused by the appearances of Monica and Kamala in ‘The Marvels’ if they hadn’t seen ‘WandaVision’ and ‘Ms. Marvel’ on Disney+ beforehand, like I have. But hopefully, ‘The Marvels’ provides a nice introduction to their characters.

Monica has been in ‘Captain Marvel’ before, only when played as a child by Akira and Azari Akbar respectively. So, the connection between Carol Danvers and Monica Rambeau is there, especially when they reunite and Monica demands to know why Carol didn’t visit her and her mother so often.

Kamala is clearly a fan of Captain Marvel, as established in ‘Ms. Marvel’, though it’s good to see how she contributes to a discussion when she, Carol and Monica are trying to work out how to defeat their opponent and restore balance in the universe. A nice teambuilding relationship with the trio. 🙂

The film’s cast also includes Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and there’s Zawe Ashton as Dar-Ben, a Kree warrior who’s the Marvels’ opponent in the film. There’s Gary Lewis as Emperor Dro’ge of the Skrulls and there’s Park Seo-joon as Prince Yan, prince of Alanda and Carol Danvers’ husband/ally. 😮

Apparently, Carol got married to someone in the time between ‘Captain Marvel’ and ‘The Marvels’. It did become too Disney-like for my tastes when the people on Aladna communicated through song. I don’t think I would be able to cope with everyone singing a conversation to me on Aladna. 😀

There’s also Zenobia Shroff as Muneeba Khan, Kamala’s mother; Mohan Kapur as Yusuf Khan, Kamala’s father; and Saagar Shaikh as Aamir Khan, Kamala’s older brother. All three appeared in ‘Ms. Marvel’ on Disney+. It was nice to see Kamala’s family involved in the film, even if they provide most of the comic relief. 😀

The film also features Goose, the alien cat with tentacles that protrude from his mouth. It was very funny when there were more alien cats/Flerkens like Goose that swallowed up crew members aboard the S.A.B.E.R. space station in order to save their lives when everyone evacuated to the planet Earth.

There were a few nice surprise appearances of characters from other Marvel superhero films/shows, including Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie from the ‘Thor’ films and Lashana Lynch as Monica’s mother Maria Rambeau. Hailee Steinfeld also appears as Kate Bishop from ‘Hawkeye’ in a cameo at the film’s end.

Kelsey Grammer even appears as Dr. Hank McCoy/Beast from the ‘X-Men’ film series in the film’s mid-credits scene. This is interesting, as I wonder if the ‘X-Men’ film series by 20th Century Fox/Studios is going to crossover into the ‘MCU’. Does this apply to the upcoming ‘Deadpool 3’ film?

‘The Marvels’ has been a very enjoyable film to check out at the cinema. I think it’s better than ‘Captain Marvel’ and it’s nice to see Carol Danvers joined by Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan. Seeing the film has given me ideas for a future ‘Doctor Who’ team-up I would like to write someday. 😀

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim 🙂

Excellent review Tim, I wasn’t as impressed by the movie as you were but I appreciate & respect your opinion.

I’m a little comic book movie phased out at the minute, I just reviewed Ghost Rider on Letterboxd.

      Hi Simon,

Glad you enjoyed my review on ‘The Marvels’. Interesting you weren’t impressed by the film compared to me. I know this film hasn’t been well-recieved in terms of the box office and by the critics. I’m hoping to see the film again soon at the cinema to see whether my opinion on it is justified.

Thanks for letting me know about your ‘Ghost Rider’ review. I hope to check it out soon on Letterboxd.

      Best wishes,

      Tim 🙂
