Quick Disney Review – ‘The Tortoise and the Hare’

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

This week, with me currently away on holiday, I’ve decided to share five blog posts about one of Greek storyteller Aesop’s famous fables – ‘The Tortoise and the Hare’. Today, I’m sharing a quick review on the 1935 Disney short film ‘The Tortoise and the Hare’, which I revisited lately on Disney+.

I first saw the 1935 Disney ‘Tortoise and the Hare’ short film on VHS when it was released in a ‘Storybook Favourites Shorts’ collection of ‘Silly Symphonies’ cartoons. It was my first experience of ‘The Tortoise and the Hare’ and I have fond memories of watching the story as interpreted by Disney.

The story of course has Toby Tortoise in a race against Max Hare. I must admit, I felt sorry for Toby when he was being laughed at for being in a race with the super-fast Max Hare. Max is pretty cocky, especially when he receives the praise and adulation from admirers, and he makes fun of poor Toby.

The film’s animation is very well-done and there are some funny moments, especially when we see Toby ‘running’ after he went past Max who he presumed was asleep. Max is rather reckless, especially when he impresses four girl bunnies at a girls’ school. It causes Max to lose whilst Toby wins the race.

Apparently, this cartoon film is believed to be one of the inspirations for Bugs Bunny in the ‘Looney Tunes’ cartoons by Warner Bros. This could well be the case, especially as far as Max Hare is concerned. Disney’s ‘The Tortoise and the Hare’ is a nice short film with fun and laughs to check out.

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim. 🙂

Wonderful review of a delightful film. Try to check out the sequel Toby Tortoise Returns. It changes the venue to a boxing match and features cameos by many Silly Symphonies characters like the Three Little Pigs,Little Red Riding Hood, etc.
