Disney+ Roundup – ‘Treasure of Matecumbe’, ‘Treasure Buddies’ & ‘Tall Tale’

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

It’s time for another Disney+ Roundup, and this time, I’ve seen three Disney-produced movies in a row these past few weeks on Disney+. The first two movies have the theme of treasure to them, whilst the third film could be sort-of treasure-related if you’re considering a deed to some farmland. 😀

The first of the three movies I saw on Disney+ lately is a 1976 film called ‘Treasure of Matecumbe’. This is an adventure western film, based on the book ‘A Journey to Matecumbe’ by Robert Lewis Taylor, taking place in post-Civil War Kentucky. Davie Burnie and his friend Thad go on an adventure.

Davie’s late father had a treasure map and he and Thad set out to find the treasure chest hidden in the Florida Everglades. Davie and Thad are joined by Dr. Ewing T. Snodgrass as well as Lauriette Paxton and Uncle Jim. They must also evade Captain Sprangler and his men who desire the treasure.

The performances of the cast are good, including Johnny Doran as Davie and Billy Attmore as Thad. There’s also Robert Foxworth as Uncle Jim and Joan Hackett as Lauriette Paxton. Peter Ustinov plays Dr. Ewing T. Snodgrass. It was a nice to see Peter Ustinov make an appearance in this adventure film.

For me, Peter Ustinov played Hercule Poirot in 1978’s ‘Death on the Nile’ and 1980’s ‘Evil Under the Sun’ as well as three TV movies and ‘An Appointment with Death’. There’s also Vic Morrow as Captain Sprangler, who’s a nasty piece of work, especially when he’s about to endanger Davie’s life.

It was tense by the film’s end when Peter Ustinov as Snodgrass became lost in a hurricane. Thankfully, he’s alive and well. I did think he was lost forever by that point. 😀 ‘Treasure of Matecumbe’ is an enjoyable film to check out, especially when concerning a treasure quest western adventure. 🙂

The second film I saw on Disney+ recently was ‘Treasure Buddies’, one of the ‘Air Buddies’ movies. After enjoying ‘Super Buddies’ and ‘Space Buddies’, how could I not check out another ‘Air Buddies’ film on Disney+. This film was nice to check out, especially as it features a globe-trotting aspect to it.

In the film, the five Buddies pups B-Dwag, Rosebud, MudBud, Buddha and Budderball are off on an adventure to the ruins of Ancient Egypt. They’re helped by a monkey named Babi and a young camel named Cammy. They explore tombs, escape booby traps and race against a Sphynx cat called Ubasti. 😮

In terms of the film’s cast, there’s Richard Riehle as Thomas Howard, joined by Mason Cook as Pete Howard. Richard Riehle has been in another one of these ‘Buddies’ movies, which is ‘The Search For Santa Paws’. I’ve also seen Mason Cook as one of the kids in ‘Spy Kids: All the Time in the World’.

I enjoyed a lot of the comedic moments featured in the film, especially when the five Buddies pups have to get past and avoid booby-traps in an Egyptian pyramid. The story is mostly told by Babi the monkey, who tells the story to his nephew Babu, who doesn’t believe that Babi’s story is really true. 😐

I was surprised to hear a young girl’s voice coming out from Cammy the camel, as I expected camels to have deeper voices than that. 😀 It’s also amusing that the five Buddies pups get themselves into these adventures when they’re first left behind and aren’t allowed to go on the trip in the first place. 😀

The third film I saw on Disney+ recently is another western adventure film that’s also a fantasy film called ‘Tall Tale’ (sometimes called ‘Tall Tale: The Unbelievable Adventures of Pecos Bill’). This film was released in 1995. It tells the story of a young farm boy who receives help from three tall tale figures. 🙂

This is to save his town from a greedy developer, who wants to change the rural landscape of 1905 with urban industrialisation. Nick Stahl plays Daniel Hackett and He’s joined by Patrick Swayze as Pecos Bill, Oliver Platt as Paul Bunyan and Roger Aaron Brown as John Henry – the three tall tale figures.

It took a while to realise that the adventure Daniel Hackett goes on is mostly a dream, as he must overcome his fears when his father is severely injured, and he has to protect a deed to his family’s farmland. Not sure if the dreams aspects of the film are well-executed, but it was intriguing to see. 🙂

Catherine O’Hara, who’s been in the first two ‘Home Alone’ films, appears as Calamity Jane, Pecos Bill’s ex-girlfriend who has him arrested. I was disappointed she only had one scene in the film. I was expecting her to have more screen-time, as her name in the film’s opening credits suggested that. 😐

There are two uncredited stars in the film, including William H. Macy (who was in ‘Jurassic Park III’) as the railroad magnate, and Burgess Meredith (who played the Penguin in the 1960s ‘Batman’ TV show) as an old man. Overall, ‘Tall Tale’ is an enjoyable and intriguing adventure film to check out.

These three latest films I’ve seen on Disney+ have been a great fun to watch. I enjoyed ‘Treasure Buddies’ more out of the three films though. 😀 I’m currently looking forward to checking out the four ‘Indiana Jones’ films released on Disney+ lately, especially in time for ‘The Dial of Death’ film at the cinema. 🙂

Stay tuned for another Disney+ Roundup on ‘Bradley’s Basement’ soon. 🙂

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim 🙂

Most interesting to look back on old Disney films after all this time. There’s always something that sets them apart from all other film studios. So it’s nice that fans may somehow still find them very special. Thank you, Tim.

      Thanks scifimike,

Well, these reviews are based on my first viewings of these films I’ve seen on Disney+. I’ve enjoyed watching them, finding them interesting in terms of how they were made in their time. I’m currently looking forward to checking out the ‘Indiana Jones’ films in the build-up to ‘The Dial of Destiny’, starting off this week with ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’.

      Many thanks,

      Tim 🙂
