Quick Movie Review – ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

Earlier this year, I saw and shared a quick review on the 2000 film ‘Dungeons & Dragons’. I’ve now seen the latest film ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ at the cinema. This is clearly a superior film compared to the original 2000 film, and has been highly rated by critics and audiences.

I enjoyed ‘Honor Among Thieves’. It’s clear the film has its own continuity and makes no connection to the original 2000 film and its sequels. I assume it’s set in the same universe, since it’s based on the tabletop game of the same name and it’s a world where some medieval characters have American accents. 😀

The visual effects are far better in the new film than in the original and I enjoyed the comedydrama featured throughout among our heroes and the villains. I wouldn’t say ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ is a film series I would see again and again, but the films are fun-filled throughout and so easy to watch.

‘Honor Among Thieves’ is a film that focuses on Chris Pine as Edgin Darvis, a bard and a charming thief, who leads a band of unlikely adventurers on an epic quest to retrieve a lost relic. However, things go horribly wrong once they run afoul of the wrong people they make a trade with in the film.

I’ve seen Chris Pine in quite a number of films over the years, including as Captain Kirk in the rebooted ‘Star Trek’ film trilogy and as Steve Trevor in the two recent ‘Wonder Woman’ films. It was easy to get into his character as a loveable rogue, especially when he had his daughter to consider. 🙂

Incidentally, I saw ‘Honor Among Thieves’ with my best mate Stephen at the cinema. He certainly enjoyed the film and was laughing out loud at the comedic moment when Edgin Darvis’ hologram distraction went wrong with his eyes popping out. I couldn’t help laugh out loud at that moment too.

There’s also Michelle Rodriguez as Holga Kilgore, Edgin’s right-hand woman, who clearly knows how to be tough when tackling knights in a castle. 😀 She also acts as a surrogate mother Edgin’s daughter Kira. I’ve seen Michelle Rodriguez before in the first ‘Avatar’ film. I enjoyed her in this film.

Justice Smith appears as Simon Aumar, a half-elf wild magic sorcerer. I’ve seen Justice Smith in Pokémon: Detective Pikachu’ and two ‘Jurassic World’ movies. I found him funny as Simon in this film and it was intriguingly enjoyable to see how he journeyed from being a coward to being brave. 🙂

Sophia Lillis stars as Doric, a tiefling druid who helps Edgin, Holga and Simon to acquire a powerful helmet. Doric can change into any beast or animal she wants to be, including an owl-bear, I believe. There’s a semi-romantic connection between Doric and Simon, which I quite enjoyed in this movie. 🙂

There’s Regé-Jean Page as Xenk Yendar, who helps Edgin, Holga, Simon and Doric with acquiring the helmet for a bit. Chloe Coleman stars as Kira, Edgin’s daughter. There’s also Daisy Head as Sofina, a Red Wizard of Thay, who can be frightening, and there’s Jason Wong as Dralas, another Red Wizard.

Hugh Grant is one of the highlight stars in the film, as he plays Forge Fitzwilliam, who is an ambitious rogue and con artist. Thankfully, he doesn’t do an over-the-top performance like Jeremy Irons did in the original 2000 film. 😀 He’s very funny and suave, especially in those English tones he uses in this.

Other stars include Bradley Cooper (Rocket from the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ films) as Marlamin, Holgan’s halfling ex-husband. It was amusing to see Bradley Cooper being smaller than Michelle Rodriguez in his scenes. There’s also Ian Hanmore (‘Doctor Who’s ‘Tooth and Claw’) as the lich Szass Tam.

The corpses scenes were funny and creepy. This is especially when the poor corpses could only answer five questions before they died again. The first corpse scene where Chris Pine’s Edgin accidentally used his five questions put me in mind of the Tenth Doctor in ‘Voyage of the Damned’. 🙂

‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ is a very enjoyable film to check out at the cinema. There’s no denying the visuals effects, story and characters are better than the original 2000 film and the cast featured including Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez and Hugh Grant are great throughout.

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim 🙂
