‘POWER SURGE’

This is one of two ‘Beast Wars’ episodes I saw on Bank Holiday Monday in August 1998. The other was ‘Fallen Comrades’. In December 1999, I recorded a repeat of ‘Power Surge’ over the Christmas holidays on VHS. Later, I owned it on ‘The Beginning’, Volume 1 VHS.

In the episode, Terrorsaur discovers a mountain that’s rich with the mineral Energon. Terrorsaur attempts to take a sample from the mountain, but in doing, he receives a power surge and is given tremendous power. He soon sets off to return to the Predacons.

Upon his return, he engages in battle with Megatron and in the end, scraps him. He takes control of the Predacons before finding himself vulnerable with the need to return to the floating mountain of Energon. He leaves Tarantulas in command, but Scorponok objects.

Scorponok happens to be second-in-command of the Predacons in the series. Tarantulas doesn’t seem bothered, as he goes off to follow Terrorsaur to the floating Energon mountain. Scorponok and Waspinator work together to get Megatron repaired. 😐

Meanwhile, Cheetor returns to the Maximals’ base, having seen Terrorsaur fly at an incredible speed from the floating mountain and seeing him defeat Megatron. Cheetor warns Optimus Primal about what occurred and the fearless leader decides to sort it out.

In the endeavour to stop Terrorsaur’s power-mad reign, Optimus takes Rattrap with him with the intention to destroy the floating mountain. Optimus fights a powered-up Terrorsaur whilst Rattrap goes to plant explosives to blow up the mountain completely. 🙂

Rattrap has a run-in with Tarantulas who, I believe, is attempting to seek power from the mountain itself. Fortunately, Rattrap defeats Tarantulas by having him fall from a great height. The explosives explode, destroying the mountain, whilst Optimus collects Rattrap.

I like how Optimus and Rattrap work together in this episode. Terrorsaur returns to the Predacons’ base to see Megatron restored by Scorponok and Waspinator. You’d think that Terrorsaur would be in trouble with Megatron, but he turns out alright in the next episode.
