‘TO THE DEATH’ (DS9)

Please feel free to comment on my review.

It’s time for another exciting episode in the ‘DS9’ series directed by LeVar Burton. The Defiant crew team up with the Jem’Hadar and we’re introduced to a new recurring character in the shape of Weyoun. 🙂

First things first, I love that joke at the beginning of the episode where Bashir was sitting in Worf’s seat in the Defiant’s mess hall. Jadzia advises Bashir not to sit there but Bashir doesn’t take notice. 😀

When Worf does come in and order an extra-large glass of prune juice, he gives Bashir a look once he sees him sitting in his seat. Bashir looks up, gets the hint and lets him to sit in his favourite seat. 🙂

The jokes rounds off beautifully when a red alert goes off and Worf has barely had time to sit in his favourite seat. I could just tell the reaction that Worf gave here and was like “I only just got here!” 😀

Anyway, the episode has DS9 recently attacked by a group of rogue Jem’Hadar in a stolen freighter. Sisko sets to pursue the Jem’Hadar aboard the Defiant with Worf, Dax, Odo and O’Brien joining him.

They eventually come across a disabled Jem’Hadar warship that transmits a distress signal as they were attacked by the rogue Jem-Hadar group. They transport the survivors, including six Jem’Hadar.

They also have their leader, a Vorta master – Jeffrey Combs as Weyoun. This episode marks Weyoun’s first and last appearance in ‘DS9’. By that I mean there are clones of Weyoun after this. 😀

Jeffrey Combs is no stranger to ‘DS9’. He first appeared as Tiron in the episode called ‘Meridian’ and has also played the recurring character of Brunt the Ferengi in ‘Family Business’ and ‘Bar Association’.

This episode also features Jem-Hadar characters like Clarence Williams III as Omet’iklan, Brian Thompson as Toman’torax and Scott Haven as Virak’kara. These Jem’Hadar were intriguing to see. 🙂

Anyway, Weyoun reveals to Sisko in private that their Jem’Hadar attackers have turned against the Dominion and that they’re trying to restore an ancient Iconian gateway. That was in ‘TNG’s ‘Contagion’.

Not that I’m expecting you to remember that, but Weyoun needs Sisko’s help to destroy the gateway and stop the renegade Jem’Hadar causing trouble in the Gamma Quadrant. Sisko agrees. 🙂

It was intriguing to see the Jem’Hadar and the Defiant crew working together. The Jem’Hadar can be difficult and they even provoke people like Worf and O’Brien in order to get a fight out of them here.

Honestly, I would like to write a ‘Doctor Who’ story where a TARDIS team e.g. the Fifth Doctor, Nyssa and Billy had to work with the Dwaxi and they found it difficult. I need to plan out that story. 🙂

Like I said, it was intriguing to learn more about the Jem’Hadar and their behaviours. For example, Omet’iklan is established as the First of the Jem’Hadar and they don’t even have women or sleep. 😐

It sort-of reminds me of the Sontarans as they’re bred as clones and they don’t have fun. The Jem’Hadar are similar in that vein, except they’re rhino-like and have more of an aggressive stance.

The Jem’Hadar also have a catchphrase which is “Victory is life!” I’ve done a similar catchphrase for my Dwaxi where they say “Death is Victory!” These new facets of the Jem’Hadar are really intriguing.

I liked the scene between Odo and Weyoun. Weyoun considers Odo to be a god as he’s a Changeling. Weyoun shares with Odo how much his people miss him. Odo doesn’t want to know. 😐

Eventually, the Defiant arrives on the planet and the crew are divided into teams when they transport to the surface. The teams soon get into fights with the regenade Jem’Hadar on the planet.

Each group make their way to the gateway in order to try and destroy it. The action scenes in this episode are pretty compelling and it was so fascinating to see Jem’Hadar fighting against Jem’Hadar.

Eventually, the gateway gets destroyed and Weyoun gets killed by Omet’iklan due to a disagreement between them over loyalty. The DS9 crew are spared as the Jem’Hadar hunt down more renegades.

‘To the Death’ is an exciting, action-packed ‘DS9’ episode featuring the Jem’Hadar. I enjoyed how this episode panned out and it was fun to see the Defiant crew and the Jem’Hadar working together.
