‘MERIDIAN’ (DS9)

Please feel free to comment on my review.

‘Meridian’ is a decent love story for Jadzia Dax’s character in ‘DS9’. I don’t find this to be a great episode, but it’s well-directed by Jonathan Frakes who provides his second contribution to the show.

Before we get into Jadzia’s story, the episode begins with a subplot that features Jeffrey Combs as Tiron, a visitor who is a business partner of Quark’s. Here is Jeffrey Combs’ debut ‘Trek’ appearance.

Jeffrey Combs would go on to play two recurring characters in ‘DS9’ – a Ferengi called Brunt and a Vorta named Weyoun. He would later play some characters in the ‘Voyager’ and ‘Enterprise’ shows.

I liked that opening scene between Kira and Odo where they’re visited by Tiron. Tiron is clearly interested in Kira whereas she finds him repugnant. I liked it when Kira made out Odo was her lover.

It was so amusing and sweet to watch with Odo supporting Kira to get away from Tiron. I’ve been inspired by that scene for Nyssa and Billy in a similar scene with a character from ‘The Austen Code’.

After being disgruntled with Kira rejecting him, Tiron employs Quark to make him a custom holosuite program with a holographic Kira. Quark says it won’t be easy, but he will do his best to get it for him.

I found it funny when Quark tries multiple times to get a holographic image of Kira. He tries to get her into a holosuite which does not work and even gets caught by Kira and Odo using a holo-imager.

Eventually, Quark breaks into secure files to get the file Tiron wants. Odo and Kira learn of this security breach but decide to use this to their advantage and have a little fun at Quark’s expense. 😀

In the end, when Tiron enters the holosuite, he finds Kira’s body with Quark’s head on top. I found that really funny and even Dad was amused by that. Tiron is really angry and promises to ruin Quark.

Anyway, back to the Dax story. On board the Defiant, the DS9 crew continue to explore the Gamma Quadrant despite the persistent threat of the Dominion. They soon see a planet appear before them.

It seems to have come out of nowhere. The DS9 team are soon welcomed by the inhabitants of the planet who seem friendly enough. The planet is called Meridian and seems to exist in various phases.

The planet can exist in a phase with people in a state of consciousness and it can exist in a phase with its people in corporal form. The planet exists in corporal form for a short period of twelve days.

When it goes into consciousness phase, the planet is gone from our universe for sixty years. My Dad found it funny when Chief O’Brien remarked it being very long for meals. I am glad he found it funny.

As the DS9 crew of Sisko, Dax, Bashir and O’Brien get to know the inhabitants of Meridian; Jadzia gets to know a man called Deral, played by Brett Cullen. They hit it off great and fall in love together.

The romance Jadzia has is decent enough. Deral seems to be a pleasant person and it seems he could give Jadzia a lot of happiness. It’s such a shame Deral can’t exist in corporal form forever here.

Jadzia and the DS9 crew do all they can to help the people of Meridian with the possibility of stabilising their world into our universe. But it seems like the process is likely to last a very long time.

Soon, Jadzia comes to a decision. She decides to stay with Deral on Meridian rather than he joining her to go to DS9. Deral seems to be needed on Meridian and Jadzia’s willing to stay behind with him.

It’s interesting the people of Meridian take this well about Jadzia staying with Deral on Meridian. The planet’s leader, Christine Healy as Seltin, had hoped for Deral to fall in love with one of their people.

There’s a section at the end of the episode where Jadzia bids farewell to Sisko, who is saddened about her departure but wishes her well. It seems that this could’ve been Jadzia’s final episode here.

Unfortunately, Jadzia is unable to stay on Meridian once everyone phases in and out as her life patterns aren’t compatible. She’s soon saved by the Defiant and is saddened once Meridian has vanished.

Like I said, ‘Meridian’ is a decent love story for Jadzia Dax. I can’t call this a great episode but it’s pleasant enough. I’m glad it explores Jadzia’s character and that it has her have a decent romance. 🙂
