‘THE SWORD OF KAHLESS’ (DS9)
Please feel free to comment on my review.

In many ways, ‘The Sword of Kahless’ is a sequel to ‘Blood Oath’ from Season 2. Whilst I don’t regard ‘The Sword of Kahless’ to be a fantastic episode from ‘DS9’, it’s a better episode than ‘Blood Oath’. 🙂
This episode features the return of John Colicos as Kor. He was one of the original Klingons from the original ‘Star Trek’ series, having appeared in ‘Errand of Mercy’. It was great to see him with Worf. 🙂
In ‘Blood Oath’, Jadzia Dax joined Kor along with Koloth and Kang on a special quest. Koloth and Kang sadly died in that episode. Now Kor has returned on a new mission with Worf and Dax to assist.
Incidentally, LeVar Burton directed this ‘DS9’ episode. I’m sure Michael Dorn enjoyed working with LeVar Burton again having starred with him in ‘TNG’. It’s like the two never parted company working. 😀
I like how Jadzia introduces Kor to Worf after he’s told stories of past battles to everyone in Quark’s bar. Kor, who hears that Worf’s a recent traitor to the Klingon Empire, is rather pleased to meet him.
It seems Kor was against Gowron and the Klingons’ plans to invade Cardassia from ‘The Way of the Warrior’. I do like how Kor and Worf got on well with each other once they first met in Quark’s bar. 🙂
Kor soon tells Worf that he’s on a quest to find a legendary item of the Klingon Empire. Worf works it out that Kor’s looking forward the Sword of Kahless, who was the founder of the Klingon Empire. 🙂
If the sword is found – which is a bat’leth of course, it could reunite the people of the Klingon Empire during troubled times. It could also re-establish Federation and Klingon relations in this current time.
Kor has a shroud which he believes once held the Sword of Kahless. Jadzia decides to do a scientific analysis on the shroud whilst Kor and Worf enjoy drinking Klingon blood-wine, which is disastrous. 😮
For you see, when Kor returns to his quarters, he gets attacked by a Lethean – Tom Morga as Soto. Letheans were introduced in that Season 3 episode ‘Distant Voices’ when Bashir was mind-attacked.
Tom Morga has also been in numerous ‘Star Trek’ roles over the years. This includes ‘Star Trek III’, ‘Star Trek VI’, roles in ‘TNG’ and ‘Voyager’ as well as playing a Jem’Hadar soldier in the ‘DS9’ series. 🙂
Soto reads Kor’s thoughts in order to find out more about the sword. When Kor wakes up the next morning, Jadzia and Worf have no idea what happened to Kor and Kor doesn’t remember anything.
Jadzia confirms the authenticity of the shroud and soon she, Kor and Worf venture out into the Gamma Quadrant to find the Sword of Kahless. They find it on a planet where the shroud was found.
On the planet, the trio get into a secret chamber in an underground vault where they find the sword. They soon get attacked by Rick Pasqualone as Toral, son of Duras along with his Klingons and Soto. 😮
Toral has been in ‘Star Trek’ before since he was the Klingon boy that Worf spared at the end of the ‘TNG’ two-parter ‘Redemption’. In that two-parter, Toral had been played the young boy J. D. Cullum.
Toral clearly want the sword for himself. Thankfully, Kor, Worf and Jadzia fight past Toral and his lot, but can’t transport back to their runabout due to a jamming signal being sent by Toral’s Klingon ship.
As Kor, Worf and Jadzia travel through the caves, tensions ensue between Kor and Worf. Kor wants the sword for himself to overthrow Gowron but Worf believe he should have it to lead the Klingons.
Jadzia notices Kor and Worf bickering with each other and gets annoyed. There’s one point when Worf almost becomes murderous as he tries to take the sword from Kor and let him slip from a cliff.
It’s clear that this is an ‘absolute power corrupts absolutely’ story with ‘The Sword of Kahless’. Much like how the One Ring ended up corrupting people in ‘The Lord of the Rings’. Thankfully it’s resolved.
After a fight with Toral and his Klingons and after Kor and Worf fight each other over the sword, Jadzia stuns them both with her phaser. Back on the runabout, our trio send the sword into space. 🙁
A shame the Sword of Kahless didn’t unite the Klingon Empire as Kor and Worf hoped since it divided between them in their honour. Overall, this has been a very entertaining Klingon episode in ‘DS9’. 😀
