‘A SIMPLE INVESTIGATION’ (DS9)

Please feel free to comment on my review.

You might consider this to be a boring ‘DS9’ episode or an intriguing character study where Odo falls in love. Probably both! I found this a very decent ‘DS9’ story to watch, good enough to fill an hour. 🙂

In the episode, Odo meets a beautiful woman in Quark’s. This happens to be Dey Young as Arissa. Odo becomes impressed by her powers of observation and he seems immediately taken in by her. 🙂

Later on, he becomes surprised when the same woman gets arrested for trying to break into the station’s computer. Odo questions her about the man she was supposed to be waiting for in Quark’s.

It happens to be an Idanian named Tauvid Rem, who got killed in the first scene of this episode. Arrisa tells Odo that Tauvid had information about the daughter she had lost about fifteen years ago.

When taking her to Tauvid’s quarters, Odo and Arissa discover that he had been killed as evidenced by the remains on the carpet. Surprised the killers didn’t remove that evidence once they killed him.

Later on, Odo finds Arissa retrieving a data crystal that Tauvid hid aboard the station. It becomes clear to Odo that she doesn’t really have a daughter and she’s escaping from the Orion Syndicate. 😐

Odo knows about this notorious criminal organisation already. Arissa reveals that her former boss named Draim probably had Tauvid killed to prevent her getting the unknown information she wants.

Arissa becomes surprised by Odo’s willingness to help her as he hides her in his quarters whilst beginning an investigation. It’s interesting how Odo becomes instantly attracted to Arissa in this tale.

Dax and O’Brien try to access the heavily protected data crystal whilst Arissa and Odo talk to each other about Draim. Most of the episode has Odo and Arissa talking to each other in certain scenes. 😐

I’m not against talking scenes in ‘Star Trek’ episodes, but it slows the pace when there’s more drama than action. As Odo and Arrisa talk to each other, the two have a growing attraction to each other. 😐

After chatting to Bashir in the holosuite, where he does one of his spy story programs from ‘Our Man Bashir’, Odo soon spends a passionate night with Arissa. So interesting Odo has a sex scene already!

It was also intriguing to hear the reactions from other DS9 members like Sisko, Dax and Worf about Odo’s spending the night with Arissa. I sense Kira’s a little jealous regarding Odo’s affairs with Arissa.

Meanwhile, Arrisa sends a message to Draim to propose an exchange – the data crystal for his life. The agreement is made but Draim has his two hit men to kill Arrisa after the crystal’s been retrieved.

The two hit men happen to be John Durbin as Traidy and Nicholas Worth as Sorm. One is more aggressive and blood-thirsty than the other while the other wishes not to kill Arrisa unless necessary.

Whilst this is happening, Randy Mulkey as an Idanian official arrives to inform Odo that Arissa is not who she appears to be. She happens to be an agent made to infiltrate Draim’s crime organisation. 😐

I’m not sure why this made Arrisa come to DS9. Maybe she did the infiltration of Draim’s crime organisation first before she came to DS9 and the two hit men came after her. I’m not entirely sure here.

With Arissa’s memory erased, the data crystal contains all of her real memories. Odo agrees to help the Idanian official find Arrisa, but they find both her and the data crystal missing. So, where is she?!

She’s facing Traidy and Sorm in the cargo hold, preparing to give the data crystal in exchange for her life. But just as they’re about to kill her, Odo and Idanian save Arrisa’s life, knocking out Traidy and Sorm.

Later on, Arrisa’s memories and true appearance as an Idanian are restored. She and Odo meet one last time. Odo realises she’s not really called Arrisa and she reveals to him that she has a married life.

Odo is left broken-hearted, despite ‘Arrisa’ telling him that the woman he knew did love him. It’s sad for Odo. Maybe he’ll have a chance with Kira someday in a future ‘DS9’ episode. Let’s really hope so.

‘A Simple Investigation’ isn’t a great ‘DS9’ episode, but it’s decent enough. I like the character study on Odo’s part and how he gets to fall in love with a beautiful woman. It’s a shame it didn’t work out.
