‘A MESSAGE FROM THE DOCTOR’

The Thirteenth Doctor’s Words of Wisdom

In a time when everybody was stuck at home!

Hopefully by the time you come to read these reviews, the Covid-19 pandemic will have calmed down most significantly or possibly ended altogether. ‘Adventures in Lockdown’ is a collection of ‘Doctor Who’ short stories written by various ‘Doctor Who’ writers in response to the coronavirus! 🙂

This was when things were pretty chaotic in 2020. I purchased ‘Adventures in Lockdown’ as an e-book via Kindle. Most of the stories featured in this collection were first published on the ‘Doctor Who’ website. There are also three new short stories that are original to this really special collection.

It’s astonishing to look back at a time when most of the world had to stay at home, most especially in the UK, during the first spring lockdown of 2020. I didn’t get a chance to read every single story published on the ‘Doctor Who’ website or in the ‘Doctor Who: Lockdown!’ season for that period. 😐

But I’m happy to be reading them here in this collection for my blog. The collection was also compiled to provide proceeds being donated to aid Children in Need around the time it was released in November 2020. I really like it when ‘Doctor Who’ provides for charity on these sorts of occasions.

There are 16 stories featured in the ‘Adventures in Lockdown’ collection. There’s ‘A Message From The Doctor’, ‘Things She Thought While Falling’, ‘The Terror of the Umpty Ums’, ‘Doctor Who and the Time War’, ‘Revenge of the Nestene’ (also known as ‘Rose: The Sequel’, which you can find on the ‘Rose’ page), ‘Rory’s Story’, ‘One Virtue, and a Thousand Crimes’, ‘The Simple Things’, ‘The Tourist’, ‘Press Play’, ‘The Shadow Passes’, ‘Shadow of a Doubt’, ‘The Shadow in the Mirror’, ‘Fellow Traveller’, a poem about ‘Listen’ (which you can find on the ‘Listen’ page) and ‘The Secret of Novice Hame’. All vary in terms of quality. 🙂

Some of the stories featured in the collection aren’t even stories at all. There are also versions of some stories in print form that were originally presented as webcasts, sometimes with actors. I hope to elaborate on that more as I go through each story in turn, which I’m really excited about doing. 😀

Let’s get started…with ‘A Message from the Doctor’.

When I first saw this on the 27th of March 2020, I felt really cheered up indeed. Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor’s words of wisdom at the start of really tough times were very encouraging. I found it a lovely message and it was great of Jodie Whittaker to perform that in her wardrobe when filming at home.

Chris Chibnall wrote the ‘message’ for Jodie Whittaker to read from at the time she filmed herself at home. The ‘message’ itself is in print form in the ‘Adventures in Lockdown’ anthology. Although the words ‘Covid-19’ and ‘coronavirus’ don’t get mentioned, the message is very helpful in tough times!

Jodie Whittaker did perform another sketch involving warning kids about Covid-19 and such in ‘United we stand, 2m apart’. But I feel this ‘message’ where Jodie as the Doctor performed in her wardrobe was very memorable, especially as it was the first one she did and it was a welcome to see her.

A shame the Sontarans didn’t make a physical appearance in the video, but then that’s not important as the ‘message’ should get across to those who are worried in tough times. The webcast itself appeared on the ‘Doctor Who’ and the ‘Newsround’ pages of the BBC website, which is good. 🙂

I’m very thankful to Jodie for recording that message and for Chris Chibnall writing it since it helped me especially to cope with the tough times we were living in during 2020. It’s also nice how Jodie kept in character as the Doctor, which I had seen very often when watching her in the TV show itself.
