‘ONE VIRTUE, AND A THOUSAND CRIMES’

The Corsair, her Parrot and the First Doctor

‘One Virtue, and a Thousand Crimes’ is a story that wasn’t featured in the ‘Doctor Who: Lockdown!’ season in the spring of 2020. It’s a story new in the ‘Adventures in Lockdown’ anthology and it features the Time Lord character of the Corsair, who was briefly mentioned in ‘The Doctor’s Wife’. 🙂

Neil Gaiman is the writer of this and according to him; this story features the seventh incarnation of the Corsair. Apparently, the Corsair previously appeared in the comic adventure ‘Old Friends’, featuring the Thirteenth Doctor. I haven’t read the comic tale yet, but it’s fascinating to find that out.

In this, the Corsair and her parrot companion steal ‘the Hand of Omega’ from City Obsidian and escape the ‘Supreme Leader’. She’s doing this on behalf of the Doctor who she previously met as the Thirteenth Doctor (I think) and receives a message from the First Doctor talking to her via hologram.

The Corsair has a pirate captain outlook about her, especially since her TARDIS happens to be disguised as a pirate ship. It’s pretty intriguing how Neil Gaiman depicts the Corsair in being pirate-like, especially when she has a parrot on her shoulder. Why dress up as a pirate though, I’ve no idea.

It’s also fascinating how the Corsair stole ‘the Hand of Omega’ for the Doctor so that he can hide it on Earth, preceding the events of ‘Remembrance of the Daleks’. There’s also mention of the Corsair stealing ‘the Hand of Omega’ from Omega himself, Rassilon and ‘the other bloke’ in the adventure. 🙂
