Ivan Asimoff and the Zyglots with the Sixth Doctor and Frobisher

The third ‘Doctor Who’ comic story featuring the Sixth Doctor and Frobisher is called ‘Polly the Glot’. It has Astrolabus back from ‘Voyager’ and features the reappearance of Ivan Asimoff and one Zyglot.

Ivan Asimoff has met the Doctor before in his fourth incarnation in the comic story ‘Doctor Who and the Free-Fall Warriors’. He’s also been in ‘The Fabulous Idiot’. It was fascinating to discover him here.

The Zyglots are massive squidgy-like creatures that travel through space. They made their first appearance in ‘The Moderator’. The Sixth Doctor and Frobisher help Asimoff to rescue one of them.

‘Polly the Glot’ is a three-part story. It begins at Terminal L.X 116/R.M where Dr. Ivan Asimoff is trying to get to his flight before he sees the TARDIS. Going over to the TARDIS, he meets Frobisher. 🙂

He also meets the Doctor and is taken aback when Colin Baker’s Doctor doesn’t look like Tom Baker’s Doctor. After getting the explanations out of the way, Asimoff asks the Doctor for his help. 🙂

He gives the Doctor a card with co-ordinates on it before he goes to catch his flight. Apparently, Asimoff works for an organisation called the ‘Save the Zyglot’ trust and he wants to save one Zyglot.

Meanwhile, the alien beings called Akkers are busy capturing a Zyglot for the Ringway Carnival. Asimoff met the Zyglot called Polly there and fell in love with her, which I find amusing in the story. 🙂

Deciding to rescue Polly, Asimoff is worried about what he will say at a meeting of the trust, since Zyglots are still being captured and the trust lacks funds. His ship soon docks into another spaceship.

Asimoff is soon taken directly at gunpoint by a disguised Frobisher and is taken inside the TARDIS where the Doctor tells him he is being kidnapped. Thankfully, he’s been kept inside to be protected.

Once again, Steve Parkhouse is the writer of this story whilst John Ridgway is the story’s artist. For the most part, I found this story enjoyable, though I wish these comic stories were adapted into audio.

It’s also interesting that Astrolabus has returned to be the villain of this story. He seems to be following the Sixth Doctor and Frobisher around a lot wherever and whenever they go in their travels.

Apparently, the Doctor and Frobisher are trying to get a ransom in order for Asimoff to be free and provide funds for the trust to save the Zyglots. The public are expected to donate to the trust in this story.

It’s revealed that Astrolabus, under the alias of Profesor Astro Labus, is the president of the ‘Save the Zyglot’ trust. Asimoff says that Professor Astro Labus will be furious about this publicity stunt. 😐

Once the Doctor hears Professor Astro Labus’ name, he faints and has a nightmare of a giant Astrolabus eating him. Astrolabus soon suspects the Doctor’s involvement in Asimoff’s ‘kidnapping’.

The Doctor gradually takes matters into his hands by going to the Akkers’ spaceship. They meet the ship’s robot – the Defender – who hits the Doctor with a mop. Asimoff threatens to shoot the robot.

The Defender turns out to be afraid and reveals that he’s the ship’s janitor. 😀 The Doctor and Asimoff soon find the ship’s commander and a shipmate of his, where they are studying Frobisher. 😐

Apparently, Frobisher wandered onto the bridge alone when separated from the Doctor and Asimoff. The Doctor and Asimoff demand for the release of Polly the Glot, but it isn’t as easy as that.

The ship’s captain threatens to press a button which will tighten the gravity net that will crush the Zyglot. Thankfully, the Defender bursts in and Asimoff shoots the button to free Polly in outer space.

The story concludes with Astrolabus kidnapping Frobisher whilst Asimoff returns to the Doctor. Before the Doctor goes off to rescue Frobisher, he gives money to Dr. Asimoff intended for the trust.

I was surprised that the story ended with Frobisher kidnapped by Astrolabus, which would set things up for the next story. It’s probably fitting the story ended with Asimoff given money by the Doctor. 🙂

‘Polly the Glot’ has been an enjoyable ‘Doctor Who’ comic story. So far, I’m enjoying these ‘Doctor Who’ comic adventures with the Sixth Doctor and Frobisher and I’m hoping they’ll be more exciting.

‘Polly the Glot’ rating – 7/10
