Davarrk with the Sixth Doctor and Peri
The sixth and final story of ‘The Cloud Exiles & Other Stories’ audio collection is ‘Davarrk’s Experiment’, which was published in the 1986 ‘Doctor Who Annual’. It features the Sixth Doctor and Peri and is read by Toby Longworth, who is a Big Finish audio veteran.
This includes the ‘Circular Time’ audio tales ‘Spring’ and ‘Autumn’ as well as ‘Lost Stories’ audio stories with the Sixth Doctor and Peri, including ‘The Nightmare Fair’ and ‘The Song of Megaptera’. He also voiced Caw and Squawk in the animated story ‘The Infinite Quest’. 🙂
In ‘Davarrk’s Experiment’, the Sixth Doctor and Peri find themselves at a mansion in the 1920s. They begin exploring until Peri comes across the attic where some deadly experiments are being conducted by a mutant wanting to restore himself called Davarrk.
The Doctor also meets three people that come to the house, including Charlie, Mark and Susan. They gradually accompany the Doctor to confront Davarrk, who holds Peri hostage. Charlie, unfortunately, gets killed off by Davarrk when he stands up against him.
The story also features statues, including a cherub that happens to be Davarrk’s eyes at the mansion. I did wonder if these were Weeping Angels, but of course they can’t be, and it turned out they were androids after all. Still scary when they’re being statues though. 😮
There’s supposed to be this sense of a haunted house feel to this story, especially when Peri says it feels like a haunted house as she and the Doctor explore the mansion. There’s clearly a ‘Frankenstein’ element, since Davarrk is a mutant and conducting experiments.
It’s been good to check out ‘The Cloud Exiles & Other Stories’ on Audible, as it’s another enjoyable collection of audio stories from the pages of the ‘Doctor Who Annuals’. I can’t say that these annual stories have been memorable and standout when listening to them.
With that said, I found the stories quite easy to get into. I’m pleased I revisited ‘Danger Down Below’ with Janet Fielding reading it, and stories like ‘Inter-Galactic Cat’ and ‘Davarrk’s Experiment’ were worth my attention. The readers are also excellent to listen to. 🙂
