Mufl and Captain J’nk on Vegan with the Second Doctor

‘Death to Mufl’ is the second story in ‘The Cloud Exiles & Other Stories’ audio collection. Originally, it was published in the 1969 ‘Doctor Who Annual’ and it features the Second Doctor. Interestingly, it takes place during his travels with Jamie and Victoria.

Apparently, Jamie and Victoria are sleeping in the TARDIS following an adventure on a planet in the dark dimensions of Galaxy G. I don’t think that’s in the previous annual story ‘The Microtron Men’, although the events of that story are briefly mentioned in this one. 🙂

This is when the Doctor recalls Victoria telling him about the story of ‘Alice in Wonderland’, which the Doctor mentioned in ‘The Microtron Men’, apparently. Incidentally, ‘Death to Mufl’ happens to be the last story in the 1969 ‘Doctor Who Annual’.

‘Death to Mufl’ is read by Geoffrey Beevers, who usually plays the Master in ‘Doctor Who’, both TV and audio. I enjoyed Geoffrey’s reading of this story, especially when he voices Patrick Troughton’s Doctor whilst he interacts with the inhabitants of the planet Vegan. 🙂

In this story, the Doctor finds himself the unwilling assassin of Mufl, who’s the ruler of the Mufl Empire. He’s being made to assassinate Mufl by Captain J’nk via a form of hypnosis. This is when he’s using his recorder to knock out Mufl to sleep as well as having a ray gun.

Fortunately, the Doctor doesn’t kill Mulf and Captain J’nk is arrested for his crime. Mufl does come across as a benign person when the Doctor interacts with him. The Doctor is referred to as ‘Dr. Who’ in this tale and the TARDIS is referred to as simply ‘TARDIS’ again.
