Visiting Canvey Island in 1953 with the Fifth Doctor and Peri
This story is by David Bailey and it features the Fifth Doctor and Peri. I enjoyed this little adventure, although the opening sequences featuring Father Hemmings are a little challenging to get into. The story is set during the Fifth Doctor and Peri’s earlier travels together, which was intriguing to read. 🙂
The Doctor and Peri visit Canvey Island in Essex, England during the summer of 1953. Upon attending a church service, Peri discovers a murder has taken place involving Marjory Kennedy and her boyfriend Walter Seacombe. She also learns that Father Hemmings had some part to play in this.
There’s also the discovery of radiation in the church by the Doctor. The Doctor and Peri soon witness Hemmings carrying in alien-like bodies and performing strange rituals on them. As the TARDIS duo try to stop Hemmings’ endeavours, the truth about Marjory Kennedy’s murder becomes unveiled. 😐
This story develops from being a soap opera-like drama into something deadly and serious. I enjoyed the contrasting differences between the Fifth Doctor and Peri when they’re investigating a certain mystery. Peri is more on the emotional, human side of things. 🙂 The Fifth Doctor is into the scientific.
The conclusion to this story is rather abrupt. This is especially when Peri tells Hemmings that she forgives him what he’s done in this story concerning Marjory’s murder and the treatment of the aliens he found. I wonder if an extra scene could have been added on to make the story less abrupt.
