    Alas Poor Adric

I don’t understand all the hate … he was a teen put in a bizarre to say the least situation …. I wish they hadn’t killed him off … Donna was more annoying 😀 Rose and Clara as well … why are male companions either killed or not as long lasting .. EXCEPT for Rory and Jamie.

      Hi RenegadeTimeLord2023,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Adric. I quite like him as a ‘Doctor Who’ companion and have enjoyed his Big Finish audio appearances, thanks to Matthew Waterhouse playing the character again. I’m looking forward to checking out the latest audio stories featuring Adric with the Fifth Doctor, Nyssa and Tegan, including ‘The Great Beyond’, later this year. I’m pleased I’ve been able to include an alternative version of Adric in one of my ‘Doctor Who’ stories called ‘Interdimensional Rescue’ where he didn’t get killed off. And he’s cameoed in ‘The Thirteen+ Doctors’. I’m looking forward to sharing another ‘Doctor Who’ story featuring Adric soon.

      Many thanks,

      Tim 🙂

True. Though to be fair, he was sent back in time by the Weeping Angels in ‘The Angels Take Manhattan’ to live out the rest of the days in the past before he died. He and Amy could never return to the future. Plus, Arthur Darvill as Rory was in two and a half seasons of ‘Doctor Who’, so I guess that technically means he and Amy were long-lasting companions of the Eleventh Doctor era.

        Thanks Xavier,

        Tim 🙂

    Hi Tim,

Yeah, fair enough. Mind you, I think Ian lasted quite a while, not as much as Rory and Jamie though. Technically speaking, the Brigadier is one of the longest serving companions.

I think the assessment of male companions compared to female companions in the first comment on this page was rather harsh. Adric was a mixed bag for me and I contend that Nyssa and Tegan are better than him and Turlough. I did like Adric at times, such as in ‘Logopolis’ and ‘Black Orchid’, but there were stories were he’s an absolute idiot, ‘State of Decay’ and ‘Four to Doomsday’ being prime examples. In the end, it was sad when he died in ‘Earthshock’.

      Hi Xavier,

I think Ian works well as a male ‘Doctor Who’ companion compared to later ones, as he’s able to balance the courage, honesty and curiosity superb without resorting to complaining like Adric and Turlough tended to do. The late William Russell’s performances as Ian are to thank for that, and I’d like to think I’ve derived Billy’s character more from Ian compared to other companions.

I would blame Adric’s inconsistency in terms of character development to the writing at the time. Nyssa and Tegan were also victims to that inconsistency in the TV series. I enjoy checking out the Big Finish audios featuring Nyssa, Tegan and Adric, especially when they enhance the characters more compared to the TV series. New series writing can also be inconsistent, particuarly for Clara Oswald, who I like when Jenna Coleman plays her but don’t like when her identity kept changing from being a caring nanny-like person to a control freak teacher. I’m glad I’ve been able to write stories featuring Nyssa, Tegan, Adric and Clara to hopefully provide a positive depiction of them compared to the TV series.

      Many thanks,

      Tim 🙂
