Part One
Song #1: ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’
Originally performed by Judy Garland
Sung by Judy Garland (in ‘Part One’, Prologue, Scene #1)
JUDY
Somewhere, over the rainbow, way up high,
There’s a land that I heard of once in a lullaby.
Somewhere, over the rainbow, skies are blue,
And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true.
Someday I’ll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That’s where you’ll find me.
Somewhere over the rainbow, bluebirds fly,
Birds fly over the rainbow,
Why then, oh why can’t I?
If happy little bluebirds fly
Beyond the rainbow,
Why oh why can’t I?
Song #2: ‘Zing! Went the strings of my heart!’*
Originally performed by Judy Garland
Sung by Judy Garland (in ‘Part One’, Chapter 2, Scene #20)
JUDY
Dear, when you smiled at me
I heard a melody.
It haunted me from the start.
Something inside of me
started a symphony.
Zing! Went the strings of my heart!
‘Twas like a breath of spring.
I heard a robin sing
about a nest set apart.
All nature seemed to be
in perfect harmony.
Zing! Went the strings of my heart!
Your eyes made skies seem blue again.
What else could I do again
but keep repeating through and through
I love you, love you!
I still recall the thrill,
I guess I always will,
I hope ’twill never depart.
I knew I loved you heaps
and you were mine for keeps.
Zing! Went the strings of my heart!
(repeat)
Song #3: ‘Good Mornin’!’*
Originally performed by Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney
Sung by Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney (in ‘Part One’, Chapter 2, Scene #22)
JUDY
Good Mornin’, good Mornin’!
We’ve danced the whole night through,
good mornin’, good mornin’ to you.
Good mornin’, good mornin’!
It’s great to stay up late,
good mornin’, good mornin’ to you.
When the band began to play
the sun was shinin’ bright.
Now the milkman’s on his way,
it’s too late to say goodnight.
So, good mornin’, good mornin’!
Sunbeams will soon smile through,
good mornin’, my darlin’, to you.
MICKEY
Here we are together,
a couple of stand-uppers.
Our day is done, breakfast time
starts with our supper.
Here we are together,
ah, but the best of friends must party.
So let me sing this party song
from the bottom of my hearty.
Good mornin’…
JUDY
…it’s a lovely mornin’.
MICKEY
Good mornin’…
JUDY
…what a wonderful day.
MICKEY + JUDY
(in unison) We danced the whole night through.
Good mornin’, good mornin’ to you.
JUDY
How do you do, do, do!!!!
MICKEY
I said good mornin’…
JUDY
…see the sun is shinin’.
MICKEY
Good mornin’….
JUDY
…hear the birdies sing.
MICKEY + JUDY
(in unison) It’s great to stay up late.
Good mornin’, good mornin’ to you.
At this point, incidental music is played to support the scenes featuring Nyssa and Billy before they’re captured by Snowy and Buster in ‘Part One’, Chapter 2, Scene #22.
MICKEY
When the band began to play
the stars were shinin’ bright.
Now the milkman’s on his way,
it’s too late to say goodnight.
JUDY
Good morning, good morning!
Sunbeams will soon smile through.
Good mornin’, good morning’,
Good mornin’, my darlin’, to you!
Song #4: ‘Embraceable You‘*
Originally performed by Ginger Rogers
Sung by Judy Garland (in ‘Part One’, Chapter 2, Scene #25)
JUDY
Embrace me,
My sweet embraceable you.
Embrace me,
You irreplaceable you.
Just one look at you – my heart grew tipsy in me.
You and you alone bring out the gypsy in me.
I love all
The many charms about you;
Above all,
I want my arms about you.
Don’t be a naughty baby,
Come to papa – come to papa – do!
My sweet embraceable you.
At this point, Judy is interrupted, as Snowy and Buster, who act as Nyssa and Billy, dance on the dance floor, as described by the Smiths in ‘Part One’, Chapter 2, Scene #25.
JUDY
I love all
The many charms about you;
Above all,
I want my arms about you.
Don’t be a naughty baby,
Come to papa – come to papa – do!
My sweet embraceable you.
More incident music is played from the song for the rest of the scene.
