‘THE SPIT FLOWER’ (MMPR)

Please feel free to comment on my review.

This episode has Kimberly building a float for the Angel Grove parade. The float contains flowers on it. Tommy helps Kimberly with her float when they’re at the Angel Grove Youth Center. Bulk and Skull come in to cause trouble, but they’re allergic to Kimberly’s flowers once in contact with them. 🙂

At least those two bullies didn’t smash up and destroy Kimberly’s float for a change. That doesn’t stop Rita Repulsa though, as she sends her Putties to destroy the float. Kimberly and Tommy fight the Putties off, but the Putties destroy the model and Kimberly is distraught once this has happened.

I must admit, that is a very cruel thing to do on Rita’s part. It demonstrates how evil she is as a ‘Power Rangers’ villain, especially as she seems to despise beautiful flowers. I wonder why that is. It’s not fully explored, and it would have been so intriguing to learn more about Rita’s hatred of flowers.

Rita soon sends her new monster called the Spit Flower. It’s a creature that can drain people of their energy by taking flowers into its mouth and spitting them out to become ferocious. No, seriously. After they’re spat out, the flowers have vicious teeth. I tell you, that is a very terrifying image to see.

The Rangers find it a challenge to defeat the Spit Flower, as its ferocious flowers weaken them. Even in giant mode, the Rangers find it tough to defeat the monster when merging the Green Dragonzord with the Mastodon, Triceratops and Sabre-Toothed Tiger Dinozords to form the Dragon Megazord.

I’m not sure why it’s just the Mastodon, Triceratops and Sabre-Toothed Tiger Dinozords that merge with the Green Dragonzord to become the Dragon Megazord. How come the Tyrannosaurus and Pterodactyl Dinozords are left out? The five Rangers can even get into the Dragon Megazord’s cockpit all at once.

Fortunately, Zordon helps the Rangers find a weak spot, as Kimberly uses her Power Bow to defeat the Spit Flower. This is also before the Rangers combine their weapons to form the Power Blaster to defeat him. By the episode’s climax, Tommy repairs Kimberly’s float for the parade with Alpha’s help.

This is where Tommy’s friendship with Kimberly is strengthened before it develops into a romance. I like how Kimberly sees the float used in the Angel Grove Parade and thanks Tommy for it. It was funny when Zack scared Bulk and Skull with a bouquet of flowers before the episode’s end credits. 🙂

‘The Spit Flower’ (MMPR) rating – 8/10

thanks for the reviews for each episode. outside of the earlier episodes and the “green with evil” story arc, this episode was probably the most memorable for me in season one coz I had it taped on vhs thru some morning network program when I was a kid and i must’ve watched this episode a thousand times haha. it was good to see the rangers and both zords be challenged by a monster that was close to being unbeatable too. plus I liked how tommy came into battle a little later in some of these episodes too, which kinda made the green ranger unique in some ways instead of being shoved down fans throats right off the bat.

      Hi Hayden,

Glad you’re enjoying my reviews on each ‘Power Rangers’ episode so far. I’m hoping to share more reviews as the years go on, particularly on Seasons 2 and 3 of ‘Mighty Morphin’. I’m pleased you have fond memories of ‘The Spit Flower’ episode after watching it many times from recording it on VHS. It’s been interesting to see how the ‘Mighty Morphin’ series developed, particularly in Season 1 with how Tommy as the Green Ranger was featured in the episodes from ‘Green with Evil’ to leaving for a bit in ‘The Green Candle’ to returning in ‘Return of an Old Friend’. I’m hoping to update the second half of my ‘Mighty Morphin’ Season 1 reviews in my upcoming “Power Month II’ review season in 2024.

      Many thanks for your comments.

      Tim 🙂
