‘ITSY BITSY SPIDER’ (MMPR)

This is an episode for Zack the Black Power Ranger. If ‘High Five’ was an episode about Trini overcoming her fear of heights, this episode is about Zack overcoming his fear of spiders. Now this is something interesting to uncover. I didn’t think Zack would be afraid of anything, especially spiders.

The episode begins with Trini and Billy trying to get signatures at their school to save the Spirit Statue in Angel Grove. Bulk and Skull cause trouble, as they open up and unleash the containers full of insects onto Trini and Billy’s audience. How come these two bullies are idiots by doing this thing?! 😐

Next day, Bulk and Skull bully the teens further when Billy shows his pet mouse – Oh, I’m sorry, his assistant – called Jack to the others. The prank goes haywire when the mouse crawls up Skull’s leg. This was pretty amusing to watch. Eventually, Billy manages to recover his mouse from Bulk and Skull.

Incidentally, I don’t think Jack the mouse makes a return appearance in ‘Power Rangers’. In fact, this might be his only appearance. I’m not sure why this episode featured Billy having a pet mouse in the episode, but it does seem rather pointless. At least Kimberley found the mouse ‘cute’ in the episode.

Meanwhile, Squatt and Baboo steal the Spirit Statue with Putties to help them. Finster makes a new monster for Rita Repulsa called Spidertron. It gets sent to hide inside a duplicate of the Spirit Statue, which is put in the Angel Grove Park. It also has moths letting off sleeping powder onto their victims.

Zack discovers the Spirit Statue’s duplicity when he’s doing a hip-hop-kido class for his students, who are put to sleep by the moths. Spidertron soon reveals himself and Zack morphs into the Black Ranger to destroy the statue. From here, Zack faces his arachnophobia in fighting the evil Spidertron.

There’s a battle between the Dino Megazord and Spidertron, before the Rangers disassemble their Zords and they fight against him, including Zack in his Mastodon Dinozord. Tommy/Green soon turns up, as he and the Rangers defeat Spidertron by merging the Zords to become the Dragon Megazord.

‘Itsy Bitsy Spider’ is another enjoyable ‘Power Rangers’ episode from the ‘Mighty Morphin’ series. It’s another filler episode, but it explores Zack’s character in an interesting way. Despite Zack saying he’s overcome his fear of spiders by the story’s end, Tommy puts a fake spider on his shoulder as a joke. 😀

‘Itsy Bitsy Spider’ (MMPR) rating – 7/10
