‘COUNTRY RETREAT’

Please feel free to comment on my review.

This is an episode where Hyacinth plans to find a ‘little place in the country’ for her and Richard. I enjoyed this episode very much when I first saw it. Before seeing it, I saw a glimpse of the episode at Stephen’s (my best mate from school) house when we were getting into ‘Keeping Up Appearances’.

Stephen had his own copy of the original Series 3 & 4 DVD of ‘Keeping Up Appearances’ and this was before my parents and I received our copy of it. I recall Hyacinth and Richard visiting the cottage itself when I saw a little glimpse of the episode, especially when they met up with the village yokel. 🙂

The cottage itself happens to be Honeysuckle Cottage. Beforehand, Richard gets annoyed with Hyacinth for choosing properties that happen to be very expensive. But Hyacinth is so naïve and ignorant of the costs of these cottages. She also doesn’t want people to think that they’re not rich. 😐

In the episode, Hyacinth and Richard come across the old farmer/village yokel who has a speech impediment. The farmer/yokel guides Hyacinth and Richard into the cottage itself. He takes a liking to Hyacinth, however. Hyacinth becomes embarrassed and she resists the farmer’s advances.

Barrie Gosney guest stars as the old farmer/village yokel in the episode. The farmer/yokel’s advances on Hyacinth are soon stopped, as his wife, played by Liz Daniels, turns up. She happens to be horrible and unfriendly, especially when she’s seen her husband chasing Hyacinth in the episode.

In this episode, I liked the moment where Onslow got up out of bed, feeling tired and groggy and he said, “I could do with a bacon butty!” Don’t we all feel like that sometimes? 😀 Also, Emmet gets really excited when Elizabeth tells him the news that Hyacinth seems to be looking for a property. 😀

It was funny when Hyacinth and Richard went over to the farmer/yokel’s house for the key and they come across animals like a goat, a pig, geese and a dog getting in their way. The old farmer’s speech impediment is funny to hear. It was very amusing when a cow appeared beside Hyacinth in the car. 🙂

There are moments where Hyacinth thinks Richard is going through a mid-life crisis. This is after he failed to give his opinion on which hat Hyacinth should wear to go out looking for a property. Rose also seems to be starting her memoirs, but it becomes clear that she doesn’t know how to spell.

‘Country Retreat’ rating – 9/10
