It’s Day 21 of ‘Bradley’s Basement’s Advent Calendar 2025.

So, what was it that caused Toby to come out of his shed in the previous ‘Thomas’ episode?

‘THOMAS IN TROUBLE’

In this episode, Thomas finds himself in trouble with a policeman. To be fair to Thomas, all he did was whistle “Good morning!”, but the policeman was pretty angry after having been woken up from his nap. The policeman however considers Thomas to be dangerous.

This is because Thomas doesn’t have cow-catchers, as he should be wearing them when running along a certain track from a quarry to his branch line with trucks and his two coaches Annie and Clarabel. Thomas’ driver protests, but the policeman is very insistent.

‘Thomas in Trouble’ is based on the second story of the same name from the seventh ‘Railway Series’ book ‘Toby the Tram Engine’. This episode depicts why Toby was woken up from his shed after his branch line was closed. He was summoned by the Fat Controller.

To resolve the issue of Thomas not being able to run on the track from the quarry to his branch line because he doesn’t have cow-catchers, the Fat Controller decides to bring in Toby and do Thomas’ job instead. 🙂 Toby also brings his coach Henrietta to the Island of Sodor.

Initially, Thomas is jealous of Toby, but they become friends once Toby frightened the angry policeman with his bell. Maybe Thomas’ jealously of Toby should have been explored further in the TV series. Plus, we never see that angry policeman again in a future episode.
