Day 2 – ‘Bradley’s Basement’s Advent Calendar 2025

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

It’s Day 2 of ‘Bradley’s Basement’s Advent Calendar 2025.

It’s time for us to see the third episode of Season 1 of ‘Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends’!

‘THE SAD STORY OF HENRY’

Once again, I saw ‘The Sad Story of Henry’ as part of the first eight episodes in Season 1 of ‘Thomas’ on VHS. This episode introduces Henry the Green Engine. He’d been seen in the previous two episodes, but this is where Henry gets introduced properly in the series.

‘The Sad Story of Henry’ is based on the story of the same name from ‘The Railway Series’ book ‘The Three Railway Engines’, which happens to be the third story. It’s a story where it ends on a cliffhanger, especially concerning Henry’s fate where he ends up in a tunnel. 😐

Henry is afraid of the rain spoiling his ‘lovely green pain with red stripes’. The driver, fireman and passengers argue with Henry, but he refuses to come out. They try pulling him out and pushing him in, but Henry still refuses to exit the tunnel whilst it’s still raining.

This episode also introduces the Fat Controller, also known as Sir Topham Hatt. He’s in charge of all the steam engines on the Island of Sodor. But even he can’t persuade Henry to exit the tunnel. It’s rather funny that he doesn’t help to pull Henry out or push Henry in. 😀

This is because his doctor has ‘forbidden’ him to pull and push. 😀 Thomas tries to push Henry in, but still, the green engine refuses to exit the tunnel. In the end, a brick wall is built in front of Henry, and his rails are taken away, preventing him from leaving the tunnel.

Thanks for reading and watching!

Tim 🙂
