Hello everyone! 🙂
Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!
Over the years, I’ve shared a variety of reviews about the works of literary author Jane Austen, who wrote romantic novels that were published in the 1800s. Most of those reviews have been about film and TV adaptations of those works rather than the books. 😐
In August 2016, I shared a new page for The World of Jane Austen. I shared five reviews on five adaptations of Jane Austen’s novels. This included the 2005 film ‘Pride & Prejudice’, starring Keira Knightly, and the 1995 film ‘Sense and Sensibility’, starring Emma Thompson.
I’ve also reviewed three TV adaptations of Jane Austen’s works that were released in 2007, including ‘Mansfield Park’, starring Billie Piper, ‘Northanger Abbey’, starring Felicity Jones and ‘Persuasion’, starring Sally Hawkins. I’ve greatly enjoyed those film and TV adaptations.
My reviews on film and TV adaptations of Jane Austen’s works dip in and out occasionally over the years. I always enjoy checking out a new adaptation now and again. Sometimes they can be in-depth reviews on certain adaptations, other times they can be quick reviews.
One of these quick reviews was on the 1940 film ‘Pride and Prejudice’, starring Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier, which I saw at Christmas time in December 2016. It’s been a while since I’ve seen that film and I hope that I’ll get a chance to revisit it someday.
I’ve seen theatre productions of Jane Austen’s works, including ‘Pride and Prejudice’, which I saw at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff in February 2017. Recently, I saw a stage version of the ‘Pride and Prejudice’ sequel ‘Death Comes to Pemberley’ in Cardiff.
From seeing ‘Death Comes to Pemberley’ on stage, it makes me want to see and do a review on the 2013 BBC TV adaptation of ‘Death Comes to Pemberley’, starring Anna Maxwell-Martin, Matthew Rhys, Jenna Coleman and Matthew Goode. I hope to do it soon.
In ‘Doctor Who’ terms, I’ve shared my thoughts on stories featuring Jane Austen. including ‘Frostfire’ with the First Doctor, Vicki and Steven, performed by Maureen O’Brien, as well as ‘False Coronets’ with the Eleventh Doctor and Clara, performed by Jacob Dudman.
One of the things I’m very happy about is that I’ve been to share my own ‘Doctor Who’ story featuring the Fifth Doctor, Nyssa and Billy where they meet Jane Austen in ‘The Austen Code’. It was a complex story set in three time zones, but it was a joy for me to write.
In November 2019, I did an in-depth review on the 1995 BBC TV adaptation of ‘Persuasion’, starring Amanda Root, which I know is my Mum’s favourite Jane Austen story. I’m happy to have reviewed both the 1995 and 2007 TV adaptations of ‘Persuasion’.
I did another in-depth review on a film adaptation of a Jane Austen story called ‘Love & Friendship’, which is based on the 1871 novella ‘Lady Susan’. Despite the film receiving positive reviews by critics, I don’t regard ‘Love & Friendship’ so highly in film adaptations.
I saw a film adaptation of ‘Emma’ at the cinema in February 2020, which is called ‘Emma.’, which I find very peculiar. 😀 I’ve also done an in-depth review on ‘Becoming Jane’, a 2007 biographical film about Jane Austen’s early life, starring Anne Hathaway.
And recently, in August this year, I got to see a re-release of the 1995 film adaptation of ‘Sense and Sensibility’ at the cinema. It was nice to see the film on the big screen for the first time and it’s fitting that the film was re-released to celebrate its 30th anniversary.
I’m not sure what the future holds in terms of future film and TV adaptations of Jane Austen’s works and whether I’ll do reviews on the actual books by Jane Austen themselves. I’m looking forward to checking out more of Jane Austen’s world as soon as I’m able to.
Thanks for reading!
Bye for now!
Tim 🙂
