It’s Day 19 of ‘Bradley’s Basement’s Advent Calendar 2024.

Here’s the nineteenth Christmas recommendation by me on ‘Bradley’s Basement’.

I know I’ve talked a lot about ‘Shada’ on my blog, but this is a lovely ‘Doctor Who’ story that’s worth checking out, whether it’s with Tom Baker or Paul McGann. Personally, I prefer the Paul McGann version, especially as it was the first one I was introduced to. 🙂

I enjoyed checking out the six episodes on audio CD and Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor is really into the story by Douglas Adams, interacting well with Lalla Ward as Romana and K-9, voiced by John Leeson. The special guest cast are also excellent to hear.

There’s James Fox as Professor Chronotis, Andrew Sachs as Skagra, Sean Biggerstaff as Chris Parsons, Susannah Harker as Clare Keightley, Melvyn Haynes as Wilkin and Hannah Gordon as the Ship. Understandably, fans are likely to turn to the original ‘Shada’ more.

But I’ll always cherish checking out ‘Shada’ in its 2003 form, especially when having cups of tea and biscuits whilst listening to it. 😀 The story was originally released as both as an audio drama by Big Finish and an animation webcast by BBCi. I prefer hearing the tale on audio.

If you want to see the animation of 2003’s ‘Shada’, it’d be best to purchase the 3-disc limited edition Blu-ray release of the 2017 version of ‘Shada’. The 2003 animation can be seen on Disc 3 and as a feature film. I wish that it had its own episode selection on Blu-ray.
