Quick ‘MCU’ Series Review – ‘Moon Knight’

SPOILERS ALERT!!!

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

It’s taken me a while to get around to reviewing ‘Moon Knight’ (more than usual, I might add), but I’m happy to say that I’ve seen one of the ‘Marvel Cinematic Universe’ shows that was released on Disney+ in 2022. I hope I’ll catch up on the other ‘MCU’ shows that have been released since soon. 🙂

‘Moon Knight’ has been an…interesting series to check out, to say the least. I find when watching these ‘MCU’ shows on Disney+, they have you guessing as to what’s going to happen next in each episode as they progress. Some shows do it well and I enjoyed the majority of ‘MCU’ shows in 2021.

For me, ‘WandaVision’, ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ and ‘Hawkeye’ are captivating. With ‘Moon Knight’ however… (sighs) …I’m sorry to say this, but I found ‘Moon Knight’ quite hard-going to watch. My Mum watches these Disney+ shows with me and she found ‘Moon Knight’ hard to follow.

It’s a shame really, as I like the idea of a new Marvel superhero being introduced in the ‘MCU’ via a Disney+ series. And there are some interesting concepts going on in this series, especially with a double-identity superhero played by one actor and with it being connected to Egyptian mythology. 🙂

But for the most part, there’s not enough action-packed adventure going on in this series. I appreciate the series is aiming to set up Moon Knight’s character as a Marvel superhero in the ‘MCU’, but there’s too much exposition going on, and it’s hard to tell what’s fantasy and what’s real.

The series focuses on Oscar Isaac (who you may know for playing Poe Dameron in the ‘Star Wars’ sequel trilogy) as Steven Grant and Marc Spector, two people who co-exist in the same body, that get drawn into a mystery involving Egyptian gods. This has them don the identity of Moon Knight. 😐

I don’t know anything about Moon Knight from the Marvel Comics and I was hoping to enjoy his introduction in this six-episode series. Sadly, as the series went on, I felt Moon Knight’s origin story dragged and it wasn’t as interesting as I thought it’d be, despite Oscar Isaac’s brilliant performances.

Sure enough, it was fascinating to learn in the fifth episode about Marc Spector’s mental health as a child; when he was mistreated by his mother and how he conjured up Steven Grant. But like I said, the clashing of fantasy and reality was hard to tell to understand the Moon Knight character fully. 😐

Also, ‘Moon Knight’, as a six-part series, felt like a drawn-out origins story, almost matching to how ‘Doctor Strange’ was introduced in the ‘MCU’. There also doesn’t seem to be evidence of any ‘MCU’ elements in ‘Moon Knight’ to make the main character connected to other ‘MCU’ films and shows. 😦

Where I felt there were too many ‘MCU’ elements in the first two ‘MCU Spider-Man’ films with Tom Holland, I wish we had more connections between Moon Knight and the ‘MCU’ to justify why he’s in this universe. Even the mid-credits scene in the sixth and final episode didn’t have that connection. 😦

I don’t know where Moon Knight is going to go after this series. There are some enjoyable performances from the cast though. As well as Oscar Isaac, there’s May Calamawy as Layla, Marc Spector’s wife, and Karim El Hakim and F. Murray Abraham as the Egyptian moon god called Khonshu.

There’s Ethan Hawke as Arthur Harrow, Ann Akinjirin as Bobbi Kennedy, David Ganly as Billy Fitzgerald, Khalid Abdalla as Selim, Gaspard Ulliel as Anton Mogart, Antonia Salib as Taweret, Fernanda Andrade as Wendy Spector who is Mark’s mother, Rey Lucas as Elias Spector who is Mark’s father, and Sofia Danu and Saba Mubarak as Ammit. There are a lot of Egyptian influences in this series.

I know ‘Moon Knight’ was well-received by critics when it was released from March to May this year and if you enjoyed this ‘MCU’ series on Disney+, I’m happy for you. As for me, this was a disappointment and it’s a shame, as I quite often enjoy the ‘MCU’ shows being streamed on Disney+. The series’ ending was also very unssatisfying for me. 😦

Hopefully, I’ll have better luck with ‘Ms. Marvel’ next. 😀

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim 🙂
