‘THE EVIL SORCERER’

Please feel free to comment on my review.

From this episode’s title…yeah, you can tell we’re going into the realms of fantasy and magic. I know there are fans of the 1960s ‘Spider-Man’ TV series and I’m sure there’s a reason why this series was looked upon fondly back in the day. But I am glad I was brought up with the 1990s ‘Spidey’ TV series.

Heck, people might call the ‘Spider-Man’ film trilogy with Tobey Maguire goofy, but at least there’s a sense of reality to those films. In this ‘Spider-Man’ episode, a historian brings Kotep, an evil sorcerer from Egypt back to life, after a long time in Hell. Did I indicate that I was underwhelmed with this episode?

There’s even a scene set long ago in the past where Kotep battled another magician called Brazman. Apparently magicians were real back in the days from long ago. Kotep is also green. What is Season 2’s obsession with green-skilled monsters? Season 1 at least had a variety in terms of their villains. 😐

Spider-Man has to stop Kotep from causing trouble once he’s been unleashed to the world. This does get Spidey caught in a dangerous gigantic web that happens to be a trap. Spider-Man soon ends up in Kotep’s world and he manages to defeat the sorcerer by destroying the staff that he uses.

I could say that Kotep is a pretty one-dimensional villain, but for this series, I’d think that would be obvious. That’s what I find frustrating about the 1960s ‘Spider-Man’ series since there’s not enough character drama going on. Heck, Peter Parker doesn’t get enough character development himself. 😦

Take the high school life Peter has. Apparently, Peter has an interest in a girl called Susan, who was introduced in the episode ‘Criminals in the Clouds’. But what Peter sees in her, I’ve no idea. It reminds me of Peter having an interest in ‘Michelle Jones’ in that film ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’.

Except it’s not clearly established why Peter has an interest in Michelle. The same applies here. In fact, Susan is rather dismissive of Peter and isn’t interested in having a date with him when he asks her out. I think Peter should stick to girls like Liz Allan or Betty Brant or Mary Jane Watson at school.

That’s another thing the series lacks as there isn’t a proper love interest for Peter to fall in love with. Susan could be that love interest, except she calls Peter a coward when he says he’s running off to fetch some help. How does Peter stating that he’s going to fetch help make him a coward, Susan? 😐

‘The Evil Sorcerer’ rating – 4/10
