‘VISIONARY’ (DS9)
Please feel free to comment on my review.
I found this to be a very good ‘DS9’ episode featuring Chief O’Brien. It’s a fun episode that plays about with time as O’Brien finds himself shifting forward five hours into the future. It’s fascinating! 🙂
At the start, O’Brien has been poisoned by radiation following an accident in ops. He finds himself experiencing several time shifts where he sees himself five hours into the future and witness events.
The first time is where he’s talking Quark. The next he witnesses a bar brawl at Quark’s occurring between Romulans and Klingons. He later witnesses his own death twice before Bashir rescues him.
It was fascinating to see how this ‘Star Trek’ episode handles time with O’Brien shifting forwards unintentionally. It helps the DS9 crew in solving mysteries regarding big catastrophes about to occur.
As well as O’Brien experiencing death twice, he also experiences the destruction of DS9 in space. O’Brien informs everyone about this and they have to find a way to stop the destruction happening.
Whilst that’s going, a group of Romulans come to visit DS9 to receive information regarding all that is known about the Dominion from the DS9 crew’s mission in ‘The Search’. They’re not very friendly.
The Romulans include Jack Shearer as Ruwon and Annete Helde as Karina. Jack Shearer has been in ‘DS9’ before, having played a Bolian in ‘The Forsaken’. The Romulans interrogate every DS9 member.
That is every DS9 member involved with ‘The Search’ mission into the Gamma Quadrant. Major Kira is very frustrated and angry when the Romulans interrogate her, especially on personal issues with Odo.
The Romulans get too personal when they ask Kira about whether she has romantic feelings for Odo. Kira storms out angrily, refusing to answer any of their questions. I don’t blame her in that regard. 😀
I like how earlier Sisko told Kira to be diplomatic to the Romulans and she said “I’m always diplomatic” before she ends up being not diplomatic. It was very good comedic timing on Kira’s part.
It was also amusing when Kira told Odo what had happened and what the Romulans were asking her. Odo agrees with Kira it’s ridiculous the Romulans should consider them as a romantic couple. 😀
There are also some Klingons aboard DS9. Hence the bar brawl that takes place which O’Brien saw in his vision from the future. The Klingons are pretty rowdy once they’ve seen Romulans in Quark’s bar.
Odo also uncovers a conspiracy regarding the Klingons attempting to assassinate the Romulans, I believe. This is discovered in an instance where O’Brien saw himself get killed by a disruptor blaster.
I like how this episode showcases O’Brien and Bashir’s friendship with each other in the series. They’ve got on well with each other by this point. They even play darts on a dartboard in the story. 🙂
Yeah, that’s become a new thing in Quark’s where O’Brien and Bashir plays darts on a dartboard. It’s to match what the ‘TNG’ crew did with playing poker on the Enterprise. I suppose that makes sense.
It’s fascinating how O’Brien meets future versions of himself as well as Bashir who give him information on how correct things in time. Whether it’s O’Brien dying or the space station about to explode!
O’Brien takes a risk by subjecting himself to more radiation in order to time shift three hours into the future to prevent the destruction of DS9 from happening. In that process, the radiation kills O’Brien.
Thankfully O’Brien switches places with his future self as his future self goes back in time to warn Sisko and the others that it’s the Romulans who caused the explosion to DS9. Yes! It’s the Romulans!
You can’t trust Romulans these days, can you? DS9 would’ve been destroyed by a cloaked Romulan warbird circling the station. Sisko, Kira and Odo expose the Romulans and force them to depart DS9.
I like how the episode ends with future O’Brien in present time using his limited knowledge of the future to annoy the profit-hungry Quark. It works once someone’s shouted “Dabo!” at the dabo table.
‘Visionary’ is a fun ‘DS9’ episode about time-travel with O’Brien! I’m glad the DS9 team were able to stop those Romulans destroying DS9 as well as destroying the wormhole because of the Dominion. 🙂
