‘TREACHERY, FAITH AND THE GREAT RIVER’ (DS9)

Please feel free to comment on my review.

In this ‘DS9’ episode, we get to learn more about Weyoun’s character. We also see more of Odo’s interaction with Weyoun – or perhaps a version of Weyoun who might really be the good guy in this.

Odo is summoned to a secret rendezvous, believing it to be a former Cardassian he knew called Gul Russol. I’m not really sure if it’s the Cardassian that Odo secretly met up with in ‘Improbable Cause’.

But it’s not Gul Russol that’s summoned Odo. It’s Jeffrey Combs as Weyoun. While Odo is suspicious, Weyoun tells him he’s defected and decides the Dominion’s war against the Federation is misguided.

Distrusting Weyoun and irritated by being called a god by him, Odo takes him into custody. Once aboard their runabout, Odo and Weyoun are soon contacted by…another Weyoun. Confusing, right?

Actually the Weyoun that’s with Odo is called Weyoun VI whilst the Weyoun contacting them on Cardassia in Weyoun VII. Weyoun VI was activated after the demise of his predecessor, Weyoun V. 😐

Weyoun VII was activated when Weyoun VI abandoned his post and was deemed defective. Weyoun VII orders Weyoun VI to activate his self-termination implant in his head. Weyoun VI refuses to that.

It’s interesting how this episode showcases more about Weyoun and the Vorta race and how they’re cloned by the Founders. It gets complex when Odo interacted with Weyoun VI aboard his runabout.

Casey Biggs guest stars as Damar in the episode. He tries to persuade Weyoun VII to give the order for Odo’s runabout to be destroyed and to prevent Weyoun VI from reaching Federation territory. 😐

Weyoun VII is reluctant to risk the death of Odo whom he considers a ‘god’ as well. But he eventually consents, stating that Odo’s never really considered him being one of the Founders at all.

This episode also features a special guest appearance of Salome Jens as the Female Changeling. She demands an update on the capture of Weyoun VI and Damar notices the Changeling looks unwell. 😐

This is the first sign of something not right with the Founders as they happen to be sick which Weyoun VI reveals to Odo when they’re journeying to DS9 in a runabout. A fascinating revelation! 🙂

It also seems that Odo may possibly be the only one uninfected by the illness that’s spreading among the Changeling. I don’t think that’s the case as Odo is bound to be infected with the illness himself.

Weyoun VI urges Odo to be prepared to take command of the Dominion himself and to turn it away from its imperialistic ways. Odo is unsure whether to take that on, especially after hearing the news.

It does get tense when Odo and Weyoun VI are escaping Jem’Hadar ships pursuing them in space. They soon end up inside an ice field and Odo and Weyoun VI hide inside an ice rock for a bit in this. 🙂

After realising they can’t escape from their pursuers, Weyoun VI soon hails Weyoun VII to see him trigger his termination implant. Weyoun VII calls off the attack and allows Odo to return back to DS9.

Weyoun VI dies in Odo’s arms and asks for his blessing. Odo agrees to give his blessing just as Weyoun VI dies. It’s quite sad to see that happen and it does affect Odo greatly witnessing his death.

I like the scenes at the beginning and at the end of the episode featuring Odo and Kira. At the end, Odo’s concerned on what will happen in the war when which side will win and he’ll ultimately lose. 😦

Elsewhere, there’s a side-plot going on where Aron Eisenberg as Nog helps O’Brien to get him a piece of crucial equipment to repair the starship Defiant. Unfortunately, it involves so many deals. 😀

This includes losing Captain Sisko’s desk for a bit and a mix-up with a shipment of wine sent to J. G. Hertzler as General Martok by his wife. O’Brien gets blamed as he signed his signature for the deals.

Thankfully it all turns out alright in the end. Sisko gets his office desk back and Martok’s wine is replaced with a better vintage. Max Grodénchik also guest stars as Rom, Nog’s father in the episode.

‘Treachery, Faith and the Great River’ is an enjoyable episode featuring Odo meeting a clone of Weyoun who defects from the Dominion. I’m intrigued about how the Founders happen to be pretty sick.
