‘THE SHIP’ (DS9)
Please feel free to comment on my review.
This is another tense, dramatic episode to be featured in the ‘DS9’ series. It has Jem’Hadar as well as a female Vorta in it and it has most of our DS9 crew under siege when inside this Jem’Hadar warship.
The episode takes place on an uninhabited planet in the Gamma Quadrant where an away team of DS9 crew are conducting a mineral survey. The team has Sisko, Dax, Worf, O’Brien and many others.
One of the ‘many others’ is F.J. Rio as Muñiz, who gets on very well with Chief O’Brien. He has a good sense of humour and often jokes with the Chief at times. Sadly, Muñiz has this very sticky end.
For you see, whilst their runabout awaits for the away team in orbit of the planet, a Jem’Hadar warship crashes near their location. The team investigate and find all of the Jem’Hadar crew there. 😐
Sisko contacts DS9 in order to have the Defiant to come and tow the ship back to the station. He hopes for the ship to be studied and perhaps be used in a Season 6 story during the Dominion war. 🙂
Oops! Spoilers! Incidentally, Major Kira leaves DS9 to command the Defiant whilst Odo has Quark and Bashir arrested for something illegal with medical supplies. And that is all we see of them in this.
Meanwhile, back with the uninhabited planet in the Gamma Quadrant, another Jem’Hadar ship turns up and destroys the runabout and its crew in orbit. A group of Jem’Hadar beam to that planet.
A gunfight ensues for a bit before the DS9 away team hide for cover and under siege inside the Jem’Hadar warship. I must say, I get a buzz whenever I see Jem’Hadar soldiers get so fighting brutal.
The Jem’Hadar are joined by their Vorta supervisor, Kaitlin Hopkins as Kilana. She does look different from previous Vorta I’ve seen in ‘DS9’ including Weyoun, as her hairstyle and clothes are different. 🙂
During the attack by the Jem’Hadar, Muñiz gets wounded in the process. Muñiz slowly bleeds to death as a result of his injury. He tries to be good-spirited about it, but it’s not looking good for him.
Kilana asks to meet up with Sisko in order to offer the return of the away team safely to DS9 if they yield the ship. But Sisko is very determined not to let Kilana and the Jem’Hadar have their ship back.
Meanwhile, a Jem’Hadar soldier beams into the crashed ship and attacks O’Brien and Jadzia inside. Muñiz thankfully shoots the Jem’Hadar in the back to rescue O’Brien and Jadzia at the cost of his life.
After meeting with Kilana, Sisko deduces that there is something valuable aboard the Jem’Hadar warship. It’s something Kilana and the Jem’Hadar are so unwilling to risk damaging in a direct attack.
Kilana meets up with Sisko again in order to offer him a chance to keep the ship if he permits the Jem’Hadar to retrieve an item from it. Sisko refuses, not trusting Kilana as she has been treacherous.
Very soon, bombardments are made on the Jem’Hadar warship from outside whilst the DS9 crew away team are trapped inside. O’Brien tries to assure Muñiz who’s become delirious that he will live.
Worf is of no comfort since he asserts that Muñiz should prepare for death. Tempers flare and a fight ensues between O’Brien and Worf. Sisko sternly orders his crew to pull themselves together. 😐
O’Brien attempts to bring the ship’s engines back online but fails in the process. Eventually, Muñiz dies. This is really saddening and it affects everyone since they’ve lost a good Starfleet officer in this.
It’s eventually revealed that the precious cargo that Kilana and the Jem’Hadar want happens to be a dying Changeling. Kilana beams inside to tell Sisko that all of her Jem’Hadar have committed suicide.
It seems agonising that Starfleet and the Dominion can’t trust each other especially when they’re on the brink of war. Kilana is allowed to take some of the dead Changeling’s remains before she leaves.
The Defiant soon arrives and tows the Jem’Hadar warship back to DS9. Sisko feels guilty about letting the crew who died in this episode down. O’Brien and Worf hold a vigil over Muñiz’s casket. 🙂
‘The Ship’ is a pretty good ‘DS9’ episode featuring Sisko’s away team under siege in a warship by a Vorta and some Jem’Hadar. The drama escalates throughout this story and it’s so gripping to watch.
