‘THE DOGS OF WAR’ (DS9)
Please feel free to comment on my review.

Here we are on the penultimate episode of Season 7 of ‘DS9’ and of the entire series itself. This is also ‘part eight’ of the nine-part finale/’final chapter’ of the ‘DS9’ series which I have enjoyed hugely.
At this point, it is sad that the ‘DS9’ series is coming to an end as I’ve greatly enjoyed the characters and the stories featured. I’m pleased the grand finale is extended into nine episodes for us to enjoy.
In the penultimate episode called ‘The Dogs of War’, the DS9 crew receive a new starship that is to replace the Defiant which was destroyed in ‘The Changing Face of Evil’. And it’s another Defiant ship!
Or rather it’s a Defiant-class starship that is called the Sao Paulo. Barry Jenner as Admiral Ross gives command of the Sao Paulo to Captain Sisko and the ship is renamed ‘the Defiant’ once he is given it.
The ship also has technology that will counteract the Breen weapon that’s destroying Federation starships in battle as well as Klingon and Romulan ships. Sisko becomes acquainted with the starship.
Incidentally, this episode is directed by Avery Brooks who plays Captain Sisko in the series. Meanwhile, the efforts of the Cardassian rebellion become strained once the Dominion strikes back.
Kira, Casey Biggs as Damar and Andrew Robinson as Garak are forced into hiding. They end up in Garak’s childhood home, protected by Garak’s late father’s housekeeper, Julianna McCarthy as Mila.
The three survivors of the Cardassian rebellion watch and hear as the Dominion announce that their rebellion has been crushed and Damar has been killed. This makes Damar rather downhearted here.
But Mila tells Kira, Damar and Garak that the Cardassian populace mistrusts the Dominion propaganda. Kira sees an opportunity where she, Damar and Garak can provoke a civilian revolution.
The trio soon bomb a Jem’Hadar barracks where Damar reveals to his people that he’s not dead. He calls upon the Cardassian people to rise up against the Dominion, to which the populace do join him.
I’m intrigued as to where this storyline will finish up in the final episode of the ‘DS9’ series. Will the Cardassians win and overthrow the Dominion? Will Kira reunite with Odo and get to return home? 😐
Meanwhile on DS9, Quark receives a message from Wallace Shawn as Grand Nagus Zek. He assumes that he’s been chosen to become Zek’s successor on his imminent retirement. Quark is quite thrilled.
But Quark discovers that Zek has instituted a number of reforms which include promoting workers’ rights, environmental protection and outlawing monopolies. Quark is so disgusted by these reforms.
Upon Zek’s arrival, who’s accompanied by Cecily Adams as Ishka and Tiny Ron as Maihar’du, he threatens to turn down the job. But it turns out Quark was not intended to be the new Grand Nagus.
It was Max Grodénchik as Rom, Quark’s brother. Quark is determined his bar will be symbolic of his old Ferenginar, but is glad for Rom that he is chosen to become the new leader of a new Ferenginar.
This episode also features Chase Masterson as Leeta, Rom’s wife and Aron Eisenberg as Nog, Rom’s son. There’s also Jeffrey Combs who plays both Brunt the Ferengi and Weyoun the Vorta in this tale.
A shame Brunt and Weyoun never got to meet in the ‘DS9’ series. 😦 There’s also J.G. Hertzler as Klingon Chancellor/General Martok and Salom Jens as the Female Changeling who’s on Cardassia. 😐
There are additional minor plot points featured in the episode to be set up in the season finale. Odo is disgusted to learn the Federation via Section 31 deliberately infected the Founders with a disease.
Dr. Bashir and Ezri Dax also start to have a romantic relationship in the episode. The Federation is also set to launch a full-scale assault on Cardassia with the Dominion on it in order to end the war. 😐
Sisko also returns home to find his wife Penny Johnson as Kasidy telling him that she’s pregnant. She’s concerned though about the warning Sisko had from the Prophets about walking a path alone.
‘The Dogs of War’ is a good instalment in the nine-part finale of the ‘DS9’ series. I’m looking forward to how things conclude in the ‘DS9’ series. It’s going to be a pretty emotional finale by all accounts. 🙂
