‘PENUMBRA’ (DS9)
Please feel free to comment on my review.

And here we are at the beginning of the end of ‘Star Trek: DS9’. This episode is the first of a nine-part arc to close off the series. Possibly ten-parts as ‘What You Leave Behind’ could be a two-parter.
I’ll get into that more when we get to that particular final episode of ‘DS9’. I have enjoyed revisiting ‘DS9’ and it’s great to see how much I remember it fondly for its epic feel in terms of a space saga. 🙂
The episode ‘Penumbra’ has Worf reported missing in a perilous region of space called the Badlands. Thankfully Worf was not swept up in the Badlands and ended up in the Delta Quadrant like Voyager.
The ship that Worf had been commanding had been destroyed by a Dominion attack. The Defiant tries to locate for survivors, including Worf, but Captain Siko and his crew are not able to locate him.
Ezri Dax, who becomes worried about Worf, feels an obligation to take a runabout to the Badlands to try and find him. This is due to her memories of Jadzia Dax when she used to be in love with Worf.
Receiving help from DS9 who become aware that she has absconded, Ezri has her runabout’s computer extrapolate a likely entry point for Worf’s escape pod into the Badlands. It isn’t very easy.
For one thing, Ezri soon takes the runabout into the Badlands and cuts off the engines. This allows the currents to carry her to Worf’s position. Ezri must overcome her space sickness in the process. 😐
Eventually, Ezri manages to find Worf and rescues him. But their conversation becomes awkward once they make to return to DS9. Worf doesn’t say thank you to Ezri for saving his life in the episode.
It seems Worf resents Ezri when she’s treating him like she were Jadzia. It’s very difficult and Ezri gets annoyed with Worf for not speaking openly with her. I don’t blame her. It must be pretty hard.
Eventually, the runabout gets attacked by Jem’Hadar ships. They soon escape by transporting themselves to a nearby planet. But they have forgotten to collect the means to contact DS9 for help.
Whilst on the planet, Ezri and Worf camp for days before they get into an argument about Jadzia. There’s even mention of Captain Body, a former flame of Jadzia’s which Worf becomes jealous by. 😐
They soon start to hit each other before it turns into a kiss and they eventually have sex – off-screen of course. I’m not Ezri should be doing this with Worf since joined Trills shouldn’t reignite past lives.
Then again, Jadzia didn’t abide by this rule so much since she made out with a former lover in ‘Rejoined’. I’m sure Curzon Dax broke the rules a number of times involving Trills and their past lives.
Later that evening, Ezri and Worf are abducted and imprisoned by the Breen on their ship. The Breen have been mentioned once or twice and they have appeared briefly in a few ‘DS9’ episodes before this. 😐
I’m not sure what the Breen’s angle is by this point, but it doesn’t look good. Why would they capture Ezri and Worf? Why imprison them on their ship. Things don’t look good for Ezri and Worf.
Elsewhere on DS9, Sisko buys land on Bajor as he plans to build a house there for his retirement. He later proposes marriage to his girlfriend Penny Johnson as Kasidy Yates to which she accepts happily.
There are preparations made in terms of Sisko and Kasidy having their wedding. Sisko asks Jake to be his best man. There are also expectations from the Bajoran who hear their Emissary is to be married.
The Changelings led by Salome Jens as the Female Changeling continue to suffer their unexplained illness. Jeffrey Combs as Weyoun reports to her that no progress has been made in finding a cure. 😐
Casey Biggs as Damar grows to have discontent with the Dominion ruling Cardassia. He also has a visit from Marc Alaimo as Dukat who undergoes cosmetic surgery to disguise himself as a Bajoran. 😐
The episode ends with Sisko receiving a vision from the Prophets. Deborah Lacey as Sarah Sisko, his mother, tells him that marrying Kasidy will bring him great sorrow and he mustn’t go through with it.
I feel the Prophets are unfair on Sisko, especially when he wants to marry Kasidy. I’m not sure how this is going to plan out in the eventual outcome of the series, but it doesn’t seem so good for Sisko.
