‘CROSSFIRE’ (DS9)

Please feel free to comment on my review.

This is an Odo story and it focuses on his feelings for Major Kira since he’s in love with her. I like how the episode explores Odo’s feelings for Kira, though she considers him more a friend than a lover. 😐

Odo enjoys having regular meetings with Major Kira in his office when they discuss crime reports on the station. I like how Odo’s happy to see Kira and he even prepares a cup of Klingon coffee for her.

Their meeting at the start of the episode does get interrupted by Quark who complains about Odo’s shape-shifting in his quarters causing too much noise. Apparently, Odo’s quarters are above Quark’s.

Anyway, the episode features the return of Duncan Regehr as Shakaar, who of course was in the Season 3 episode…‘Shakaar’. 😀 He’s currently the First Minister on Bajor and he’s come to visit DS9.

Shakaar is to attend a meeting about Bajor’s membership into the Federation. However, Odo warns Sisko that a threat has been made on Shakaar’s life by the True Way – a Cardassian extremist group.

Odo suggests that Shakaar doesn’t attend the meeting at all and return to Bajor. But Bruce Wright as Sarish speaks on Shakaar’s behalf, saying the First Minister’s very determined to attend the meeting.

Kira agrees, since she knows Shakaar well. I do wonder though whether Sarish would’ve turned out to be in league with the True Way, since…well, he doesn’t provide a major part to the episode itself.

Anyway, Odo and Worf tighten Shakaar’s security whilst aboard the station. This includes the use of Bajoran security as well as Starfleet security; providing secure routes to protect Shakaar’s well-being.

At first, it does seem that Odo and Shakaar get on well. And for the most part, Odo holds a high respect for Shakaar and it is good to see scenes between the two even when in Shakaar’s quarters. 🙂

However, Odo begins to see the bond between Kira and Shakaar as they become closer to each other. Shakaar even admits to Odo that he is falling in love with Kira, which must be painful for Odo.

Quark is the one who notices that Odo has feelings for Kira, despite her and Shakaar failing to notice. But Quark is the last person that Odo wants to share his feelings with, especially with regards to Kira.

Sadly, Kira doesn’t turn up for her weekly meeting with Odo as she had breakfast with Shakaar. She doesn’t even have time for Odo, giving a station’s tour to Shakkar. Odo still comes along for security.

But Odo gets distracted in his duties when he’s with Kira and Shakaar inside a turbolift. After he responds to a fake Worf message, the turbolift goes out of control and it starts plummeting down. 😮

Thankfully, Odo changes his arms into solid pylons in order to stop the turbolift’s descent. It’s later revealed that the fake Worf message was a part of a True Way agent’s way to assassinate Shakaar. 😮

It’s quite painful to see Odo being reprimanded by Sisko for his lapse in attention whilst in the turbolift with Kira and Shakaar. Odo reassures Sisko that something like that won’t ever occur again.

Despite that, Odo is still troubled by Shakaar and Kira being together. This is especially when Shakaar spends the night with Kira in her quarters. Odo patrols the corridor outside in order to speak to Kira.

The next morning, Kira tells Odo she and Shakaar are together. She’s oblivious to Odo’s pain but says she’s glad Odo is a friend with whom she can talk to. Odo says he’s ‘happy’ for both her and Shakaar.

Once he returns to his office, Odo hears from Worf that he found and arrested the True Way agent. It becomes too much for Odo. He returns to his quarters, goes into a rage and destroys the furniture.

Quark confronts Odo in his quarters because of the noise but is surprised to see how distraught the constable is. Quark is clearly concerned for Odo as a friend; despite saying he is interested in profits.

In the end, Odo doesn’t share to Kira how he feels for her and informs her he’s cancelled their weekly meetings. Kira is surprised by Odo’s decision, despite having her relationship with Shakaar. 😐

‘Crossfire’ is a very good ‘DS9’ episode to explore Odo’s feelings for Kira. It’s a shame he doesn’t get to tell her how he feels about her since she’s with Shakaar. Hopefully things will get better in future.
