‘CHRYSALIS’ (DS9)
Please feel free to comment on my review.

This ‘DS9’ episode happens to be a sequel to the Season 6 episode called ‘Statistical Probabilities’. I enjoyed this episode, especially as it’s a love story for Bashir who could’ve had ‘the perfect partner’.
The episode begins with Bashir feeling lonely. O’Brien is meeting up with Keiko and the kids for dinner and Odo and Kira are about to have a date in the holosuite. I felt quite sorry for Bashr there. 🙂
Just when Bashir is about to settle for the night in his quarters, he’s interrupted by Aron Eisenberg as Nog who tells him ‘Admiral Patrick’ wishes to see him in the infirmary. Curious, Bashir soon gets up. 🙂
In the infirmary, Bashir meets up with the four mutants from ‘Statistical Probabilities’ – Tim Ransom as Jack, Michael Keenan as Patrick, Hilary Shepard Turner as Lauren and Faith C. Salie as quiet Sarina.
Jack, Lauren and Patrick impersonate as Starfleet officers when Bashir meets them in the infirmary. I found it funny when Patrick impersonated an admiral and kept saying “That is a stupid question!” 😀
I just found out that Hilary Shepard Turner played the villainous Divatox in ‘Power Rangers Turbo’. I had no idea it was her. She looks so different without the mask she wore in that action-packed TV series.
Anyway, the mutants have come so that Bashir can try to cure Sarina’s cationic condition. It’s nice Sarina gets a chance to shine in this episode since she didn’t say very much in ‘Statistical Probabilities’.
In fact, the actress Faith Salie had to re-audition for the role of Sarina before being cast in the episode since she didn’t have any lines in her previous episode. I’m glad she got to come back in this.
Jack, Lauren and Patrick help Bashir to refine a medical instrument that he can operate on her to help her come out of her catatonic state. It takes time and it doesn’t seem much has happened here.
Thankfully, the operation becomes a success and Sarina is able to speak and interact with her surroundings for the first time. It takes a short while but Sarina does gain the ability to speak at last.
When she reunites with her friends, Sarina is included in a sing-along with Jack, Lauren and Patrick. It was fun to see Sarina singing away and Faith Salie wasn’t required to sing in her re-audition for the role.
As time goes on, Sarina becomes closer to Bashir whilst her friends are discussing the eventual Big Crunch – the collapse of the universe. Bashir soon invites her along for a tour of the space station. 🙂
It’s at this point that Bashir falls in love with Sarina and he assigns another doctor to take over her care. He shares with O’Brien how he feels Sarina is the perfect woman in his life in being similar as him.
Bashir has Sarina accompany her to meet up with friends like O’Brien, Ezri, Odo and Kira in Quark’s. Sarina also gets the hang of playing dabo at the dabo table, though she almost loses Quark’s money.
Whilst Bashir is keen to pursue a romantic relationship with Sarina, she’s not ready for it and she goes catatonic again. This is after Bashir invited her for dinner in his quarters and she didn’t turn up.
When Bashir asks Jack, Lauren and Patrick to find out what’s going on with Sarina, they tell him that it’s something to do with him. Bashir goes to Sarina and asks her what’s wrong and she talks again. 🙂
As Sarina recovers, she tells him she felt pressured to thank him for curing her by being the woman of his dreams. It is sad how this has turned out as Sarina could’ve been the perfect woman for him.
I like the scene Bashir has with O’Brien where he realises he pushed things too fast for Sarina and didn’t give her time to think on their relationship. O’Brien appreciates that Bashir was feeling lonely.
Eventually, the episode ends with Sarina leaving DS9 for a scientific internship. She and Bashir share one last kiss before they go. Jack, Lauren and Patrick also return to the institute they had come from.
‘Chrysalis’ is a good ‘DS9’ episode exploring Bashir’s character and I like how his romance with Sarina is handled. It’s tragic it never worked as Bashir intended but at least they parted on very good terms.
I like how this story with Bashir interacting with the mutants Sarina, Jack, Lauren and Patrick comes to a close from whence it started in ‘Statistical Probabilities’. There’s still Section 31 to worry about. 😐
