‘BEHIND THE LINES’ (DS9)
Please feel free to comment on my review.

The turning point in the Dominion War arc featured in Season 6 of ‘DS9’ takes place here. It builds up to what happens in the last two episodes of the six-episode arc and some characters are affected.
On the Starfleet side of things, Sisko and his crew have returned from another mission against the Dominion aboard the Defiant. They have a ritual ceremony with a discharged power cell to keep the morale up.
Sisko is soon informed that Starfleet Intelligence has discovered a massive sensor array that the Dominion is using to track Starfleet shp movement. Sisko determines one way to destroy that array.
They have to approach it through a star cluster. Sisko is determined to lead the mission and destroy the array. However, Sisko gets promoted to adjutant to Barry Jenner as Admiral Ross in the episode.
Thus, he won’t be commanding the mission. Jadzia Dax gets placed in command of the Defiant. Throughout this subplot, Sisko misses his crew and he frets about their safe return from the mission.
I wish we could’ve seen the mission take place where Jadzia and the Defiant crew get to destroy the array. But I suppose it would’ve taken up a lot of time and there’s the other subplot to cover on DS9.
Thankfully, Jadzia Dax and the Defiant succeed in destroying the array and return to the starbase where Sisko is. Jadzia ends up conducting the discharged power cell ritual compared to Sisko earlier.
Elsewhere on DS9, Major Kira and our other heroes become successful in spreading distrust between the Cardassians and the Dominion. Kira and Max Grodénchik as Rom overlook a brawl in Quark’s bar.
This is between Cardassians and Jem’Hadar. Despite keeping up appearances, how long can Marc Alaimo as Gul Dukat and Jeffrey Combs as Weyoun keep unity between Cardassia and the Dominion?
It isn’t helped when Dukat hasn’t been successful in destroying the Starfleet minefield which has prevented Dominion reinforcements from arriving from the Gamma Quadrant. Dukat’s in trouble. 😀
Odo isn’t happy with Kira’s efforts in spreading distrust between Cardassia and the Dominion. He also questions Kira about his loyalty to her, especially as his contributions to meetings get ignored. 😐
Things aren’t helped when Salome Jens as the Female Changeling turns up to visit Odo on DS9. She hopes to spend some time with him, while Odo is grudging about what the Changelings did to him. 😦
That was in ‘Broken Link’ at the end of Season 4 by the way. Although initially distrustful of the Female Changeling’s motives, Odo is persuaded to ‘link’ with her, physically joining bodies together.
Kira is horrified by Odo ‘linking’ with the Female Changeling, despite him wishing to know more about his people. She asks him to promise not to ‘link’ with the Female Changeling again. Odo does.
Later at Quark’s bar, Quark, through drink, gets Casey Biggs as Damar to reveal the Cardassian/Dominion’s latest plan. Apparently, they’ve found a solution in destroying the minefield.
They hope to do it by using the station’s deflector array. Quark relays this information to Kira and her resistance party which includes Odo, Jake and Rom. I liked it when Quark joined the resistance. 🙂
Rom says that he can sabotage the deflector array before the Cardassians and the Dominion get a chance to destroy the minefield. But Odo has to disable the system systems to allow Rom to do this.
However, when the day comes, Odo finds himself in the middle of linking with the Female Changeling. This is bad. Kira finds Odo isn’t in his office and hasn’t switched off the security systems.
Kira tries to warn Rom not to open the deflector systems, but he sets off the security alarm. He gets captured by Damar. Kira later confronts Odo about what he didn’t do, but he doesn’t care about it. 😦
He merely says that whilst linked to the Great Link, nothing else mattered to him. I don’t know if the link was still having an effect on him at the time as Odo clearly isn’t himself when he’s talking here. 😦
‘Behind the Lines’ is a great tense episode in the ‘DS9’ series. I wonder what will happen next and whether Odo will be forgiven for letting everyone else down including Major Kira. I really hope so. 😐
‘Behind the Lines’ (DS9) rating – 8/10
