Planetary Conversions and the Seventh Doctor

This ‘Doctor Who’ Short Trip story is by Ian Mond, and it features the Seventh Doctor. I found this an unusual Short Trip story to check out, as it’s written as an audit inquiry into Planetary Conversions. This includes memos, position papers and interviews. Some of which I found a challenge to decipher.

Planetary Conversions is a business organisation that outsources planetary invasions and guarantees ‘near-bloodless revolutions’. I didn’t fully understand what was going on in this story, as it’s taken from various points between characters. Some of these characters’ stories don’t add up throughout.

There’s Fred, who happens to be a professional hitman and was hired by Planetary Conversions to kill the Doctor. There’s Michael Haines, the team leader of Planetary Conversions, who wrote a paper that illustrated how the Doctor destroyed several business. So, he’s a very mean-spirited soul.

There’s Tony Mitchell, a chemist at Planetary Conversions who works with the Doctor, and there’s Rachel Lane, an executive secretary at Planetary Conversions. I enjoyed Rachel’s segments in the story. They’re more interesting, especially when she’s obsessed about having breakfasts on Sundays.

It’s interesting how Rachel’s story unveiled, since her husband Philip died, and she soon met the Doctor who took her to Earth in the 21st century to have breakfast somewhere at a restaurant called the European. Incidentally, Hulbert Logistics from ‘Human Resources’ gets mentioned in this story. 🙂
