Comic Relief with the Eleventh Doctor, Amy and Rory
I came across the second mini-episode of this story by chance. 🙂 ‘Space’/’Time’ is a two-part mini-episode story featuring Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill as the Eleventh Doctor, Amy and Rory inside the TARDIS. It’s the Comic Relief special for 2011 by Steven Moffat and it was very enjoyable to watch.
Steven Moffat is no stranger to Comic Relief in ‘Doctor Who’. In fact, he wrote the 1999 ‘Doctor Who’ spoof ‘The Curse of Fatal Death’ beforehand. So it must have been a ‘full circle’ journey for Steven to come back to write a ‘Doctor Who’ Comic Relief story, except now fitting in with the TV series.
I missed the first episode of this two-part mini-story on TV, but managed to catch the second episode and found it very enjoyable and funny to watch. It was pretty complex in places too. I saw the complete mini TV story of ‘Space’/’Time’ on BBC iPlayer and got the complete picture altogether.
So how does this Comic Relief story work out? Well, in ‘Space’ (‘Part One’ of the story), the Doctor is conducting repairs to the TARDIS with Rory helping out underneath the console. However, Rory looks up Amy’s skirt through the glass floor above him and accidentally drops something important.
This causes the TARDIS to go into shutdown, which annoys the Doctor. I used a similar joke from this Comic Relief in one of my ‘Doctor Who’ stories with the Fifth Doctor, Nyssa and Billy in ‘Dawn of the Dwaxi’. But I didn’t have Billy look up Nyssa’s skirt in that scene, just in case anyone is wondering. 😀
The Doctor, Amy and Rory have big trouble on their hands though, as the TARDIS appears in the console room. It’s the same TARDIS, but at a later point in time. It does get confusing when the Doctor walks through it and ends up back in the same console room with Amy and Rory seeing him.
This is all going to end up being ‘Logopolis’, isn’t it? But the confusion ensues, as another Amy from the future walks in with the Doctor, Amy and Rory seeing her and she says to them, “Okay, kids! This is where it gets complicated!” I’m sure Amy’s famous line influenced me with some of my reviews. 😀
In ‘Time’ (‘Part Two’ of the story), we have the future Amy explaining to the Doctor, Amy and Rory what happened when she walked in the TARDIS. It’s actually funny when future Amy’s explaining it all, as the Doctor, Amy and Rory are pretty baffled by what she says, as I’m sure many viewers were.
The Doctor then sends current Amy into the TARDIS, so that future Amy can become current Amy again. Again, I like how clever this Comic Relief special is in terms of its timey-wimeyness. But you have to be very alert to get what’s going on as well as appreciate the jokes if you’re a casual viewer.
Seconds later, another future Amy and Rory enter the TARDIS for the Doctor, Amy and Rory to see them. I found it funny when future Rory was rambling away about what happened and Rory is bafflingly wondering if he’ll be able to remember that. I hope I’m explaining well in this review here.
The current Amy and Rory go inside the TARDIS in order for future Amy and Rory to be the current them. Thankfully, the Doctor saves the day, as he gets help from a future Doctor to pull ‘the wibbly lever’. The current Doctor then goes in the TARDIS before the future Doctor becomes him in the end.
Did I really say all those things in my review? I’m mind-boggled already. Anyway, ‘Space’/’Time’ is a pretty good Comic Relief special that manages to be complex and humorous at the same time. I don’t know if many will be able to get this Comic Relief adventure, but I was able to get it from being alert.
This two-part story is available on Disc 1 of ‘The Complete Series 6’ DVD of ‘Doctor Who’ with Matt Smith. Mind you, the two episodes are listed separately from each other and not compiled together as you would expect. I’ve also realised that my review for this story is over a page longer than I intended. 😀
‘Space’/’Time’ rating – 8/10

Ever the perfectionist Tim, your reviews are like the postman they always deliver, this was a average comic relief special, i was suffering post traumatic David Tennant syndrome by this point so i actually forgot about these mini episodes.

Hi Simon.
I can’t claim to be a perfectionist. I always make mistakes even when I write my reviews. I even noticed a spelling/grammar error when I re-read this review.
Glad you enjoyed my review on this Comic Relief special. I had no idea there was a post traumatic David Tennant syndrome. Was that pretty common at the time? 😀
Don’t forget my latest Series 5 reviews on ‘Doctor Who’ with Matt Smith. So far you’ve commented on my reviews for ‘The Eleventh Hour’, ‘The Beast Below’ and ‘Victory of the Daleks’.
Many thanks.
Tim. 🙂
