Neanderthals with the Eighth Doctor, Fitz and Trix

This story by Steve Cole features the Eighth Doctor, Fitz and Trix from ‘The Eighth Doctor Adventures’ BBC Books range. I’m not very familiar with ‘The Eighth Doctor Adventures’ BBC Books. I’ve read only one of those books called ‘EarthWorld’ which features the Eighth Doctor, Fitz and Anji.

I’ve also heard Fitz, played by Matt di Angelo, in ‘The Company of Friends: Fitz’s Story’ by Big Finish. My lack of knowledge about ‘The Eighth Doctor Adventures’ BBC Books range shouldn’t be an issue though. This should be an easy story to get into, introducing Fitz and Trix to its brand-new audience.

Sadly, I don’t think that comes across in the reading experience. Like ‘EarthWorld’, ‘We Can’t Stop What’s Coming’ wasn’t very inspiring. I’m sure Steve Cole is very into the Eighth Doctor, Fitz and Trix characters, but this tale came across as average, especially concerning Neanderthals and bankers. 😐

The story is read from two viewpoints. One is from Fitz himself and the other is from Glory Jakarta, the leader of the bankers fighting against the Neanderthals on an unnamed planet. There are intriguing concepts about the bankers being connected to the Neanderthals once they killed them. 😐

But it wasn’t altogether satisfying. I didn’t feel like I knew who Fitz and Trix were as fleshed-out characters from one short story. I don’t usually talk about the story illustrations, but the one for the Eighth Doctor in this tale makes him look like the one from ‘The Night of the Doctor’. A bit confusing!
