A Holiday for Sarah Jane Goes Wrong with K-9

This story called ‘The Sow in Rut’ is by Robert Perry and Mike Tucker. It features Sarah Jane and K-9 Mk III. What’s fascinating about this short story is that it takes place after the ‘K-9 & Company’ spin-off special ‘A Girl’s Best Friend’. This means ‘The Sow in Rut’ is part of the ‘K-9 & Company’ series. 😀

Even Brendan Richards, who appeared in ‘A Girl’s Best Friend’, make a brief appearance at the end of this short story, right down to his honking laugh, which Sarah Jane gets annoyed by. I’m saddened that Brendan didn’t make a proper appearance. This could’ve been a full-on ‘K-9 & Company’ story. 😐

In the story, Sarah Jane tries to have a holiday in the Lake District. She stays in Cornflower Cottage, which used to be an inn called the Sow in Rut. K-9 is with her, and she soon goes out to have a meal in the local pub one evening. She then runs into a woman called Aggie, who gives her some heather.

Aggie happens to be the local witch in the village where Cornflower Cottage is. She gives the heather to Sarah Jane as protection. Sarah Jane learns about what happened at Cornflower Cottage involving pigs that got possessed by a demonic spirit. There are certainly biblical connotations in this little tale.

I’m very familiar with the Gospel of Mark, as that contains the account of the man possessed by the demon calling itself Legion that begged to be sent into a herd of pigs by Jesus Christ. Sarah Jane has trouble at Cornflower Cottage, but she soon sorts out K-9 being possessed by the demonic pig spirit.
