SERIES 9, EPISODE 6
Please feel free to comment on my review.

I have to tell you, Series 9, Episode 6 of ‘Call the Midwife’ was tough to sit through at the time of watching it via BBC iPlayer on February the 9th 2020. It was a very tough one for me and my parents.
The episode concerns a baby with a heart problem who sadly dies. My parents had a similar experience in losing my sister Bethan who had a similar condition. She was 6 years when she died. 😦
It was worse in the ‘Call the Midwife’ episode since the baby had only been born a few days and had weeks to live. This came from the mother contradicting someone with German measles in the story.
My Mum told me that this is what happened when she had Bethan. I did wonder if a cure would be found for the baby and whether all will live happily ever after. It usually goes in that direction on TV.
But the episode stuck to its guns and the baby passed away quietly. It was pretty upsetting and emotional to watch. I can’t say my parents and I enjoyed the episode when we saw it on BBC iPlayer.
My Mum had tears in her eyes from watching the episode. Despite that, the episode is really good and well-written. The emotional drama is all there and the performances of the cast are well-done. 🙂
The episode has Juliet Oldfield as Maureen Bryant, Valerie’s cousin who has the baby that sadly dies in the episode. There’s Jack Gordon as her husband Charlie who supports his wife in this tough time.
Despite the toughness that my parents and I had from watching the episode, there were other good moments peppered throughout. This helped to ease the tension via some rather gentler subplots. 🙂
I liked the subplot where Cliff Parisi as Fred Buckle organised the Poplar Horticultural Show. The midwifery team at Nonnatus House help out with providing their contributions for this special show.
I like how the episode ended with everyone gathering for the Horticultural Show and Judy Parfitt as Sister Monica Joan’s contribution involved gathering the babies of Poplar. 😀 It was sweet to witness.
I was amused by Sister Monica Joan having a teddy bear in her room at Nonnatus House. 😀 It’s something that I expect Sister Monica Joan to have, especially in catching up on ‘Call the Midwife’. 🙂
Leonie Elliot as Lucille places a photograph of Maureen and Charlie’s deceased baby among the babies at the Horticultural Show. I found it touching to see, signifying a poignant acknowledgment. 🙂
There is another subplot that occurs in the episode where the little Chinese girl May, who’s become an adopted daughter of Stephen McGann as Dr. Turner and Laura Main as Shelagh, is involved here.
May’s mother, Yennis Cheung as Esther Tang, returns to her life. It was pretty tense when the mother wanted to see her daughter but not vice versa. It does become complicated in the episode. 😦
It was a nice surprise to see Lee Armstrong back as Dr. Kevin McNulty to help the ‘Call the Midwife’ team for a while, following his previous appearance in Series 9, Episode 4. I didn’t expect his return.
Georgie Glen as Miss Higgins was quite sharp with Dr. McNulty though. I did like his scenes with Ella Bruccoleri as Sister Frances when he was helping her through some pains she had, which was sweet.
It was nice to see Zephryn Taitte back as Cyril in the episode. It was tense between Cyril and Lucille when they seemed to argue about not seeing each other very often enough, which was intriguing. 😐
I liked how things resolved between them at the episode’s end, especially when Cyril came to the Horticultural Show. Hopefully, Lucile and Cyril’s relationship will continue to blossom in the series. 🙂
So yeah, Series 9, Episode 6 of ‘Call the Midwife’ was an emotionally-charged and tough episode to sit through concerning the baby with the heart problem. It’s not a favourite of my Mum’s, I’m afraid.
But it’s a well-written episode, peppered with nice moments. I’m glad there were other plot elements to distract from the heartbreaking aspects of the episode. Some were gentler in the telling.
I was looking forward to seeing the next ‘Call the Midwife’ episode from watching the ‘next time’ trailer. I recognised a blind actress from a certain ‘Doctor Who’ episode in it. It looked so intriguing. 😀
‘Series 9, Episode 6’ rating – 7/10
