‘Call the Midwife’, Series 9, Episode 5 (TV)

SERIES 9, EPISODE 5

Please feel free to comment on my review.

I had a great time watching Series 9, Episode 5 of ‘Call the Midwife’ on Sunday the 2nd of February 2020. This was all after watching the ‘Doctor Who’ episode ‘Praxeus’ the same night via BBC iPlayer.

This episode featured quite a surprise development for me with Jenny Agutter as Sister Julienne’s character. It was one I didn’t expect to happen and I thought, at the time, it was the first it occurred.

This was before I began watching the ‘Call the Midwife’ series from beginning to end in 2020 and discovered Sister Julienne took her habit off in Series 4, Episode 2. It’s amazing what you discover. 😀

In the episode, everyone is pretty excited about the release of the new movie called ‘The Sound of Music’ at cinemas. Yes, that well-known musical film was released in 1965. I checked that up online.

So I think this means that this ‘Call the Midwife’ episode takes place sometime around late March/early April. I don’t blame the people that wanted to see ‘The Sound of Music’ at that time. 😀

I’ve seen ‘The Sound of Music’ as a movie! It’s good! 🙂 I really enjoyed Judy Parfitt as Sister Monica Joan who wanted to see ‘The Sound of Music’ on the big screen. I’m sure I would feel that way too. 🙂

Sister Monica Joan tries to win two tickets at a raffle, but that doesn’t work out well. She even tries to persuade Sister Julienne for a group outing to see the film, but it’s initially rejected in the episode.

That changes later on concerning what Sister Julienne does later in the episode. 😀 In the end, Dr. Turner and Shelagh’s two little girls win the raffle tickets to give their parents a night out together. 🙂

It was nice to see that Stephen McGann as Dr. Turner and Laura Main as Shelagh went out together to see ‘The Sound of Music’. I also like the mirrored irony in Shelagh’s character with the certain film.

Shelagh was once Sister Bernadette during Series 1 and 2 before she ended up marrying Dr. Turner. It’s intriguing to hear the parallels between Shelagh and Maria’s character in ‘The Sound of Music’. 🙂

Meanwhile, Ella Bruccoleri as Sister Frances has trouble caring for a diabetic patient whilst the wife Samantha Spiro as Grace Calthorpe is quite rude to her. Yeah. That was quite unexpected to witness.

Mrs. Calthorpe was pleasantness at first before she became rude later on. Sister Frances didn’t know what she had done to upset her, but it turns out that Mrs. Calthorpe is quite ill during the episode. 😐

Sister Julienne also receives a bit of abuse from Grace in one of the ‘heated’ moments. Grace accuses her for not understanding what real-life is about, in being a sister at Nonnatus House and all.

This leads to…Sister Julienne disrobing her sister clothes and ending up in normal clothes, as she blends into society for a bit. 🙂 Whoa! I didn’t see that coming as I watched this particular episode. 😀

It was extraordinary to see Sister Julienne out in town without the sister headdress and all. She soon goes to enjoy seeing ‘The Sound of Music’ at the cinema. And she has a choc ice! 😀 Naughty her! 😀

This soon leads to a group outing to see the film at the end. It pleases Sister Monica Joan. I’m glad the episode ended on a note where the ‘Call the Midwife’ team went to see ‘The Sound of Music’. 🙂

This episode also has a nice subplot featuring a loving married couple who have a baby. Karl Davies as Ronald Mallen gets anxious when becoming a father whilst Carla Langley as Aileen has the baby. 🙂

Ronald becomes panicky when the baby has quite an odd birth mark which is called a ‘strawberry mark’. I must admit, that was particularly disturbing to see when watching the baby in the episode. 🙂

Beforehand, Linda Bassett as Nurse Crane is quite annoyed when Ronald insisted on being there with his wife during the delivery of the baby. Thankfully, the delivery of the baby turns out to be alright. 🙂

I liked the connection that Fenella Woolgar as Sister Hilda formed with the married couple. This is especially in a scene with Ronald as he shared with her about his childhood by the episode’s finish. 🙂

Series 9, Episode 5 of ‘Call the Midwife’ is very good to watch indeed. I liked ‘The Sound of Music’ being featured and how the ‘Call the Midwife’ characters react to its release at the cinema in 1965. 🙂

It was astounding to see Sister Julienne appear in a new light which I hadn’t seen before at that point. It was nice to see the plots featuring Grace Calthorpe as well as Ronald, Aileen and their baby.

‘Series 9, Episode 5’ rating – 8/10
