‘Call the Midwife’, Series 8, Episode 7 (TV)

SERIES 8, EPISODE 7

Please feel free to comment on my review.

I saw Series 8, Episode 7 of ‘Call the Midwife’ on the 24th of February 2019 via BBC iPlayer. This episode has quite an emotional gut-punching ending to it, especially for one of our main characters.

It concerns a family member that one our main characters has whom we’ve grown to like in two episodes. It also connects to a story that began in Episode 1 of Series 8 and continued in Episode 4. 😦

This is where the abortion storyline in Series 8 comes to a close and we get to find out who has been committing the abortions in Poplar recently. It’s something we’ll talk about more when we get to it.

In the episode, Helen George as Nurse Trixie looks after Rosie Sheehy as a heavily pregnant Heather Pugh. Heather confides in Trixie that her waterworks have been causing her some pain very recently.

After some routine tests, it turns out that Heather has gonorrhoea. It happens to be a sexually transmitted infection. I’m not exactly sure how gonorrhoea was caused but it does sound so painful.

Trixie and Stephen McGann as Dr. Turner raise concerns about Heather. The sexually transmitted infection can cause serious health issues regarding her unborn child, which is pretty understandable.

Soon, there are tensions between Heather and her husband Phill Langhorne as Vince. It turns out that he’s been seeing a sex worker recently, which could be a factor in Heather’s recent gonorrhoea.

I did wonder how this plotline was going to turn out and how things were going to be reconciled between Heather and her husband Phill. Dr. Turner has to take some tests to check their conditions.

I didn’t think that Heather would take her husband back after he seemingly cheated on her. But Phill is pretty determined to make amends to her and perhaps Heather might let him off just this once. 🙂

This episode also provides us a nice storyline featuring Ella Bruccoleri as Sister Frances. She’s given a chance of experience by Miriam Margolyes as Mother Mildred to attend to her very first solo birth. 🙂

Clearly Sister Frances is nervous about this since she wasn’t permitted to conduct solo births by Nurse Crane who’s still in hospital. Mother Mildred is determined Sister Frances has the experience.

Very soon, Sister Frances meets up with Kellie Shirley as Connie Blakemore who’s about to give birth. It’s fine at first with the pre-checks at the clinic, but the actual birth might not be easy as one thinks.

I liked how the storyline is handled between Sister Frances and Connie Blakemore. I’m sure Connie knew that Sister Frances was nervous since she supports her as well as Sister Frances supporting her.

Thankfully, the birth is successful and I liked it when Sister Frances thanked God for giving her courage. Sister Frances is also there for Connie when she’s struggling following the birth of her baby.

Like I said, Linda Bassett as Nurse Crane is still in hospital, I’m afraid. Trevor Cooper as Sergeant Woolf continues to enquire about her well-being, though Nurse Crane is not sure what to make of it.

Leonie Elliot as Lucille has another date with Zephryn Taitte as Cyril Robinson, but a cinema trip turns out to be out of the question for them. It soon turns into joining the girls out on a bingo night!

Lucille and Cyril join Trixie, Jennifer Kirby as Valerie and Ann Mitchell as Elise Dyer, Valerie’s grandmother on this bingo night. Yeah, Valerie’s gran returns in this episode, which was nice to see.

Unfortunately, it turns out Valerie’s grandmother Elise is found out to be the one responsible for providing the abortions to expectant mothers. That was a shock when I was watching the episode. 😦

I did wonder if Elsie was responsible for the previous abortion incidents featured in episodes of Series 8 like Episode 1 and 4. I’m sure the answer gets provided by the time we come to the finale. 😐

The episode does seem to end on a shocking cliff-hanger ending, especially since this is the penultimate episode in the build-up to the season finale. Valerie is pretty upset by this occurrence. 😦

There’s also still the issue of Dr. Turner and his wife Laura Main as Shelagh about to lose the Chinese girl May whom they’ve adopted into their family. I wondered what would occur in the next episode.

‘Series 8, Episode 7’ rating – 7/10
