‘Call the Midwife’, Series 10, Episode 5 (TV)

SERIES 10, EPISODE 5

Please feel free to comment on my review.

I saw this ‘Call the Midwife’ episode after attending the ‘Bedford Who Charity Con’ in October 2021. For the most part in viewing ‘Call the Midwife’ at home on DVD, I haven’t attended many conventions.

In the episode, Sister Hilda is away. I wouldn’t have realised that since Sister Hilda isn’t talked about much in the episode. She’s away on a refresher course. Hopefully she’ll be back with us very soon. 🙂

Jenny Agutter as Sister Julienne steps in to carry out Sister Hilda’s home visits. The new pupil midwives, including Megan Cusack as Nancy Corrigan, seem to be settling well at Nonnatus House. 🙂

There’s a sense of hope in the air. Even Max Macmillan as Timothy has acquired a place at medical school, to which Stephen McGann as Dr. Turner and Laura Main as Shelagh are really happy about. 🙂

However, things aren’t well for Paula Lane as expectant mother Vera Sands. When Sister Julienne visits her on a routine visit, she becomes concerned for her daughter who displays troubling symptoms.

Sister Julienne and Dr. Turner are determined to find out what’s wrong with the toddler daughter. There are soon concerns about Vera Sands’ newborn receiving the same symptoms as the daughter’s.

There’s anxiety for Vera as well as for her husband Daniel Easton as George Sands when they try to resolve the issue. Thankfully, all works out well in the end and the baby is okay once it’s delivered. 🙂

The episode’s second subplot involves an overly protective mother who struggles to cope with her daughter’s teenage pregnancy. She wants it to be low key as her daughter is in the maternity home.

Julia Haworth guest stars as the overly-protective mother Doris Owen. Julia Haworth is well-known for being in ‘Coronation Street’ and I’ve seen her in Series 1, Episode 5 of ‘Monarch of the Glen’. 🙂

Molly Jenkins guest stars as Jeanette Owen, the teenage daughter who struggles to abide by her mum’s wishes to seek a life in university. In the story, Jeanette has to give up her baby for adoption.

As the episode progresses, it’s made clear Jeanette doesn’t want to do that but her mother overrules the choice. It’s quite fascinating how the mother-daughter relationship gets portrayed here. 😐

Jake Simmance guest stars as Glen Witton, Jeanette’s lover and the father of her child. He also happens to be an old friend of Timothy Turner’s. I like how Jeannette and Glen are fond of each other.

Right to the point where they seem committed to spend their lives together. This is especially when the mother Doris sees to it that the baby is given up for adoption, so much to Jeannette and Glen’s grief.

It’s strange that. I thought for one moment that Doris would actually come round and let Jeanette and Glen have their baby. The moment seemed to be rather evident once the baby had been born. 😦

Nancy Corrigan becomes frustrated by the mother’s domineering manner whilst Jeanette is at the maternity home. Shelagh puts Nancy in her place as she cannot let her feelings get the better of her.

I like how Georgie Glen as Miss Higgins interacts with Jeannette and Glen as a couple. Miss Higgins stops Jeanette from running away and helps them both in naming their child before it’s taken away.

Olly Rix makes another appearance as Matthew Aylward in the episode. He phones Helen George as Trixie for help when he is having trouble with taking care of his child since the nanny has walked out. 😦

Thankfully, Trixie is able to help Matthew and they both recruit a nanny from a certain selection of contenders. I believe they acquire a suitable contender for a nanny once this episode’s concluded. 🙂

As Matthew keeps phoning Trixie for help, I’m not sure if there’s a certain potential romance going on between them. It isn’t clear at present, especially since Matthew’s still grieving for his late wife. 😐

There is a scene where Zephryn Taitte as Cyril and Leonie Elliot as Lucille give speeches on their wedding engagement as well as having a cake to celebrate. It’s a sweet scene to see in the episode.

Series 10, Episode 5 is quite enjoyable. It’s a pity about the young couple who lose their baby because of the daughter’s mother giving it up for adoption, but I’m glad Vera Sands’ story turned out alright.

‘Series 10, Episode 5’ rating – 7/10
