SERIES 10, EPISODE 4
Please feel free to comment on my review.

The fourth episode of Series 10 of ‘Call the Midwife’ does have some happy endings in it. Mind you, there are disturbing medical issues featured in the episode that make me wonder if it’s all for real. 😐
The episode takes place in July 1966. Britain is in the grip of World Cup fever. Mind you, I think football has become overrated nowadays and there’s too much hype about it for my personal liking.
Unbeknown to Annabelle Apsion as Violet, Cliff Parisi as Fred Buckle puts on an accumulator bet for the World Cup, which keeps any winnings rolling forward. It’s a pretty risky bet on the final for Fred.
Fred places a bet on West Germany to win. But when the final actually happens, it turns out England is the winner against West Germany. How come Fred placed a bet on a country that isn’t his own? 😐
The bet was known between him and Daniel Laurie as Reggie in the tale. It was funny to see Fred’s crestfallen face when he found out he lost the bet. Maybe England didn’t always win the World Cup.
The episode features the arrival of four new pupil midwives at Nonnatus House. One of them happens to be Megan Cusack as Nancy Corrigan, who becomes a brand-new regular cast member. 🙂
Nancy is quite young and inexperienced, but is keen to learn and do her job. She may not always be good on the listening side of things as Helen George’s Trixie supervises her on one of their rounds. 😐
Nancy also gets into trouble when making one of the patients nervous in wanting to have her baby at St. Cuthbert’s Hospital rather than at the maternity home. Laura Main’s Shelagh is put-out by this.
Thankfully, Nancy is able to redeem herself when she’s able to deliver the mother’s baby at Nonnatus House. Judy Parfitt’s Sister Monica Joan’s crisis of faith is also resolved in helping Nancy. 🙂
In the episode, there is a subplot which involves a 17-year old boy – Jack Archer as Michael Leeks – who harbours a desperate secret. Stephen McGann as Dr. Turner meets Michael during the episode.
Apparently, Michael, who is a bell-boy at a hotel, happens to have a condition that prevents him being interested in women. It makes him more interested in men. It makes him afraid in the episode.
When Michael is told this by Dr. Turner and Linda Bassett as Nurse Crane, he shares this revelation to his parents. They are Michael Gould as his father Godfrey and Rebecca Lacey as his mother Rita. 🙂
It was nice to see Rebecca Lacey in the episode as she played Irene Stuart in Series 4 of ‘Monarch of the Glen’. Quite naturally, Michael’s parents are shocked by the revelation that he shares with them.
Upset that he can’t live up to his parents’ expectations, Michael flees from home. Michael’s parents become worried about him once he’s gone, but they soon provide a lead on where he can be found.
Dr. Turner and Nurse Crane go to the Lakewood Grange where it deals with people like Michael, although quite brutally. Dr. Turner is appalled by the methods the doctors use at Lakewood Grange.
I like how Michael returns to his parents and how they still love him despite the condition he has. Quite often, parents can disown their children for being what Michael is. That’s not the case here. 🙂
The episode also features the return of Olly Rix as Matthew Aylward, the man who lost his wife ( 😦 ) but got a baby boy in Series 10’s first two episodes. Matthew invites Trixie to the baby’s christening.
I like how Trixie is still a part of the lives of Matthew Aylward and his baby after the death of the wife. I’m not sure how Matthew’s character will develop, since he appears in the rest of Series 10. 🙂
This episode also sees the relationship of Zephryn Taitte as Cyril and Leonie Elliot as Lucille continuing to blossom. By the episode’s end, Cyril proposes to Lucille and she happily accepts him. 🙂
I’m glad that’s turned out well for both Cyril and Lucille. I wondered whether they would become engaged to be married at some point in the series. Here’s hoping that the wedding will happen soon.
Series 10, Episode 4 of ‘Call the Midwife’ does have its happy endings. I can’t say it’s an overall pleasant episode to watch, but then again, ‘Call the Midwife’ deals with some very difficult issues. 😐
‘Series 10, Episode 4’ rating – 7/10
